84-88 Dash/Heater Lights TUT
« on: Feb 12, 2008, 06:20:06 PM »
This Thread is Featured in our Tech from our Forum Members section!

As most of you know, i switched my dash lights to Blue.
And few of you requested to know how to do it.

I ordered them off of Ebay for 10 bucks shipped from Hong Kong.
man look around and find a closer shipping hub, they took like 2 weeks to get here, or more.
they very in price from 8-15 bucks for 5-20 lights.
They are 194 Blue LED Wedge Inverted Side Light Bulbs.

There are many places you can order from.
Schucks will order them 2 for seven bucks for non LEDs.
and most online at stores are over $2 a bulb.
So ebay was the cheapest for me.

Here is your shopping list:
GAUGE CLUSTER:

*194 Style Bulb
There are 4 little light sockets that change the color of the Tach, Speedometer, Fuel, Volt, Oil Pressure, and Water Temp gauges.
The rest are color is determined by turn signals and warning lights, and are clear bulbs.

*73 Style Bulb
Work some of the warning lights as well.
(clear bulbs due to colored plastic as the color)

CLIMATE/HEATER CONTROLS:

*73 Style Bulb
One bulb determines the whole gauge.

You need 4 for the dash.
and you need one 74 LED for  the heater ( which i did not order )

Here a tutorial to show you how.. its fairly simple.
The Heater Controls are almost indentical to the 89-95... so the heater part of the TUT will work with both.
I am doing the Dash cluster lights in my dads 95 4Runner, so ill see if there are any differences there and post.

Step One: [first two pics]
Remove the 5 screws holding the dash molding on

Step Two: [last two pics]
Remove the 4 screws holding the cluster on

Step Three:
Disconnect the Speedo Cable, and the 3 Harness plugs from the rear of the Cluster.
The second picture shows what the speedo cable looks like, to help you see how it goes on and off and where to hold the clip down at.

Step Four:
Remove the 4 lights from the back of the cluster
These four control the 6 guages (SR5 Models), the rest are all dummy lights, and indicator lights
The last two pictures show the old green bulbs and what the new LEDs look like installed

Step Eight: (two pics shown)
Push the clip in that holds the clear plastic piece in, and remove.

(the light is to the right of the "2" gold screws)
replace that and reverse to install.

the last pic is the after shot of the cluster.

i just took a pic of the dash and heater... not the brightest on the heater, as its a regular clear bulb with blue magic marker on it.... need LEDs for them.

Nice work. Do you have any pictures of the LEDs themselves? I've never seen those before :eye: :eye:

Nice write up.  If you don't want to go LED you can get an improvement by just removing the green light condoms and run a brighter bulb.  I used the Sylvania 194LL bulbs.  According to the Sylvania website it has a higher than stock light output than most 168's or 194 and the LL's last longer.

I've purchased LED's like that online.  I run them in my motorcycle to save a few watts off the charging system.  Trust me I need it.  They make them in most bulb types.  Even 1156/1157's

I can take a picture of my 87 and post it later.

A decent improvement.  Those green light condoms are restricting the brightness of the bulb.  Get rid of those and run a slightly brighter bulb the 194LL and its not bad.

Thanks man. i dig the white as well. and thats also a good idea if you cant get LEDs... i personally dont like the orangeish white.... not all that eye friendly.
Clean white and Bright Blue is amazing.

An even cheaper method is to peel off the green stuff on the stock bulb and then you have clear bulbs, and if you want color whip out a sharpie and color the bulb up.

I did mine when a bulb in the cluster went out.  I figure while I was in there I should replace them all since they were all original bulbs and its kind of a pain to take it apart.

Yeah, that green covering is NG.  You want nice and clear and have to turn it down some brightness, because sometimes you need it full on bright.
