79-83 a "better" output shaft???
« on: Jan 28, 2008, 07:43:55 AM »

The better, softer t-case output shafts [79-83] cannot be told apart from the later shafts [84-95] which have added nickle and a deeper heat treat that makes them more brittle.

Marlin

So I dug this out of a very old post.  My question is does this still hold true?  In today's world of cryo, cromo, blah, blah, blah, is this still a "better" output?  I know it's not going to be cromo...but I really don't need cromo.  Cryo is reasonable enough, but do I need it?  Would an 81-83 output (which I have) be comparable already, or should I maybe get it cryo'ed?  Am I overthinking this???

I think it comes down to shock-loading, which I probably would do fairly often - not rocks, but MI mud, stumps, etc.

I've been contemplating going 23-spline between a 2.28 crawler and a 4.7 rear so from what I understand the output is the next thing to break.

i think your over thinking it,  the  odd's of breaking a output  is very small

Run whatcha brung.  I would doubt that MI mud, stumps, etc would break an output.  If it does, then fix it and make a trophy out of your broken output.

I'm kind of thinking you guys are right...why is it that it always helps to hear someone else say it?
