Goodyear MT/R, IROK ??
« on: Jan 02, 2008, 02:48:18 PM »
I looked up the weight of the 35" MT/R (66 lbs.)and 36" IROK (33 lbs.) the question is not for on the hwy or snow or ice. Which one from personal experience is your choice for rocks and trails mud?

I'm looking to see how these tires preform on a Toyota truck that is of average weight. Thanks in advance for not flaming me for a question that is almost stupid.

I have ran both. I used to run 35" MTRs and loved them on and off road. They worked very well on the rocks no complaints here. I am now running 39.5" IROKS and love them. I do not drive my truck on road anymore and would probably not run the IROKS on road. If I had to choose between the two for off road purpose I would choose the IROKS.

Thanks  for taking the time to answer I'm running 35" MT/R's now but may have a chance on some IROK's and was curious if it was worth getting them since mine are not worn out yet.

I ran 36" Iroks on my D.D. Ram and now run 36" Iroks on my Toyota trail truck.  Don't think I will ever switch to a differant tire.  They don't last long on the road though.  I ran Bias Ply on both my trucks. I run Radials on my Dodge now.

had 37" mtrs.  Gashed side walls on two of them under 1000 miles.  Bought some bias 39.5 iroks for $20 more a piece and 7lbs heavier.  Will buy Iroks again with the time comes.   Mtr's didn't like the mud here, good on rocks and great on the street.

50% tread on the rock's never leaked or lost the bead.but i switched too krawler t/a's wich seem to grip way better but
have been leaking out the bead. :twocents:

i havent ran iroks but my choice was between these two tires also. i went with the MTRS and i love them so far, ive been snow wheelin with them a few times and just a dry run at the highlakes with them all the times i aired down to about 5-8psi and they did amazing. i left them like that on accident around town for a while also and still amazing... but thats just my opinion... i still want to run iroks, but if i do they will be the 40's and be baller.... :twocents:

Run the IROKS hands down the best all around off road tire, i've ran them for the last couple months and love them in the mud, snow and trails.

I would suggest to not get the Iroks. The sidewalls are about as tough as a babies behind. I had a BIG cut in my sidewall after having about 30 miles on the tires with mild wheeling.

So why get something like a MTR with a weaker sidewall?  I've gashed 2 mtr's and 4 bfg's.  My Iroks still going strong.

The BFG MT2s are very good from what I hear - by far better than the old ones and they have a very tough reinforced sidewall. (as in everyone seems to be drooling over them in the reviews and forums)

The big km2's and 15" rimed ones haven't been released yet.  Probably going to still have the junk loose beads that slip on the rims and leak are or lose a bead.  But if you have bead locks, more power to you.

Thanks for the replies. I've run the BFG's and sliced up 2 of my sidewalls on a lights rig my samurai, got the MT/R's and am impressed with there side walls same trails same rocks. This decision is looking tough !

Once I have the lift I'm gonna get the bfg km2 on 15's.
The new side walls are said to be full 33% tougher, they balance well and They happen to be rated for over 100 mph!

I have been on the trail with many friends with MTR's and they ALL have sidewall plugs in them due to the week sidewalls! I have a set of 36' IROKs and love them for the rocks and mud i would go with the IROKs. But if you are going to be running a substantial amount on the road i would go with the mtr's they have great street manners do well offroad (if you can deal with the weak sidewalls)

Yeah dont run the IROKS on the road. You will eat em up quick, I ran 35" MTRs on and off road and they lasted.

go with the iroks, i had 39.5 bias iroks that lasted 2 years, 1 of which i was D/D and even when they were at 50% they still had mad traction in snow!! they slipped a little in rocks but it didnt slow me down much, i since have put 42" iroks on and they are awesome, but i miss my 39.5's, i think there are the best tire for the price and the perfect size for any application, these 42"s will be overkill on rocks, cant wait to get another set of 39.5"s  :twocents:

I moved from a 35 MTR to the 39.5 IROK recently. I never had any issues with sidewalls with the MTRs and to be honest, the IROK sidewall seemed to be a bit thinner than the MTR when I made the switch (BTW: the MTRs still had 90% when I pulled them). :dunno: Performance wise the IROK is a much better tire in the rocks but you need to air them down fairly low to get them to stick. Beadlocks of some sort are a must. :twocents:

My experience  differs.   39.5 iroks on new steel Cragar 15x10.  Holding beads so far at 3-5 on trail and 1-2 in the snow.  I think new rims make a difference.  Not that I don't want Stauns.  :gap:

WOW,Thank you  all who took time to answer this post. It looks like it will not be a waste of $$ for the IROK's.  All I need to see now is if I have the extra $$ for the IROK's.
