Toy 3.4 or Chevy 4.3
« on: Dec 27, 2007, 06:18:43 PM »
I have a 91 22re with 240k + mile and a crack on the block, I have a almost every thing for a 4.3 swap. A buddy of mine said he was going to pull his 3.4 and 2w auto tran. out with 120k mile on them, He would sell to me for cheep. So I'm trying to find out what the better motor would be to run.
 Thanks for the help.

Better?  That is certainly debatable.

Depends on what you are after.  If you want reliability first I'd go 3.4 but if you want cheap power go 4.3.

If you already have the parts the 4.3 is going to be cheaper to swap in.  It will also be cheaper to maintain and get power out of.  Its so easy since the 4.3 shares its design with the small block.

I'd go 4.3, and I own a 3.4 5speed truck.  I love it, its the smoothest running engine I have ever owned.  You can barely feel it when idling.  And I just spent $500 to get 8rwhp out of my 3.4 with a set of headers.  Yeah, I think it was worth it.  But you spend that same $500 on the 4.3 you will get a lot more power.

Do you think the 4.3 isn't reliable?  It has got to be one of the best V6 engines GM has ever produced.  I myself love the CPI 4.3 good for 200 ponies stock.  My .02,  Jim

The 4.3 may have 100k max on it, if I do put it in I'd put a little $ into it to pump it up some.

the 3.4 is a good motor but id go with the 4.3 if you had a 3.0 truck to start with i would use the 3.4 becous mechanicly its a bolt in but in this case its a lot of work ither way

IMHO I don't think it is as reliable, stock 4.3 vs stock 3.4.

That being said, I'm more likely to swap in a 4.3 since I think it will be cheaper.  But I wouldn't install it without doing a few things.  Intake gaskets for example were a problem with many GM engines.

just finished a 4.3 swap in my toyota, love it, nice power over the 22re nice on the trail.  only problem i'm having right now is it isn't tuned very well and runs a little rough but that is just taking some more time to figure out what is up with it.  still really nice and well worth the effort IMHO.

I love the power from my 2000 vortec, but have broken everything in the differentials, front and rear ring and pinions, three birfs, one locker.  I guess I'm hard on the pedal.   The motor runs great from idle to the rev limiter, very smooth.  It took me a while to get it running right and dialed in but well worth it.  It takes a lot of fuel pressure to make the vortecs run good, over 60 pounds.  I had to install larger lines from the tank to the fuel rail and back, as the return line was stacking up and flooding the motor.  I say go for the vortec.....but be prepared to break some stuff...

1991 vortec with TBI most simple and easy to work on fuel injection and the wiring are much cheaper for that version. If you want to keep you stock 5 speed i have the conversion bellhousing, clutch and all parts for it. I have only broken one rear, dont have a heavy foot and the late model votecs have 275 compared to the one you have a little under 200 hp

I was talking to a guy and he was saying I should get a marine cam and heads to put on the 4.3 , good bottom end and will run high rpm's all day.
I think ill run the 700r4 instead just so I don't have to change the computer.

Thank for all the input guys.

I have a 4.3 tbi that I rebuilt, its out of a 91 s10 blazer. I put a granny four speed behind it. It runs damn stronge, low through high rpms, and thats with 39.5 tsl's. These engines have more than enough tork. Also I can cruise on the freeway no problem.  :twocents:

I have a 4.3 out of a 91 2wd 5sp 1500. I was wanting to put a 350 or 700r4 behind it. this is going into a 86 4runner with a 5spd  I still have the donor truck. what kind of computer issues or other speed bumps should i be prepared for. sorry i'm just starting to research this and found this thread.
