Theft and destruction... Something to motivate ya-
« on: Jun 08, 2004, 12:41:43 AM »
So this morning I went to my summer class at the university, and normally I pay the $2 for a one day parking pass and park on campus, but today I was with my buddy and we both decided to park just off campus about a 5 min walk from our classes.

We parked on a side street just off from a major street, about 9:30am. There were of course lots of other cars parked and it was actually a great idea. Good exercise and some lunch money saved..

Class for me went until 12:30p and I was walking back out to my car which was a ways down this side street, and on my way, a girl stopped me on the sidewalk near a 7-11 and asked me if I had a white car. She continued saying that two white cars got broke into today, one being her's. They stole her cd player and her cd collection. I checked out her car and the entire passengers side window was completely shattered. They didnt waste any time. Of course, being that my car is white, I was nervous :nerv: I asked, 'was the other white car a small car?' and she said yes. :smack: crap...

So Im walking down the side walk and Im thinking the following:
1) I took my face plate with me, its in my backpack, so they cant really sell the radio without that..
2) Ive got a fuel management pcm 'biggyback' system that I put away in my glove box (its wired through it) which is convenient as its concealed, but its simple to steal.
3) Ive got all my nice Craftsman tools in my tool box behind my drivers seat. About a 1 year collection of tools. Not so much invested, but I would hate to have to replace all those tools.
4) Ive got a couple misc electronic devices such as a MSD knock monitor and a Split second air/fuel meter not to mention 3 Autometer gauges which as you know are kinda pricey.. but I doubt someone would steal those, especially in the day time when its more of a snag-and-run type breakin.

So all thse thoughts were running through my head. And I'll just spare you the suspense and tell you that the other car was not mine. It was a white Geo Metro 2 cars ahead of mine, and her car was 3 cars behind mine. So my car was right in the middle of a two car break-in. I don't know why they passed my car up........

So here's my security provisions:
1) Ive got a car alarm. Yeah it might not do much good in that situation, but its great because I park my car right out my window. I am relaxed all the time at home-
2) I had my club on.
3) As mentioned I took my face plate from my radio with me.

So anyways, I just wanted to share this experience because some times I just slip my face plate under my seat and go to class. I just happened to take it with me today..  :disturbed: I also have a kill switch for my coils, but its located in my trunk and I usually only use that for long stays, like if im at a theatre, ball game, or gone for the weekend ect.

So Im thinking of relocating that switch into my cab so I can use it every time I park.

But anyways, I just wanted to remind everyone how easy it is for some :flamer: punks to get your stuff. I see from time-to-time stolen rigs reported on forums and I just want to remind everyone to not procrastinate with any security devices you need to install on your rig. If youve got a Club and you're just going inside vons or something, just put it on the steering wheel. It'll only take ya 20 seconds. If youve got kill switches, then by all means use em. Protect your ride, you'll never know when something might happen, and it'll happen when your not expecting it-  :ack:

Ive had my stereo stuff stolen so much i gave up locking my rigs.  I leave the sterep installed without using the metal bend out tabs that make it hard tp pull out of the dash (a mad thief is a destructive thief) I make sure and leave anything of value pretty much out of site like under a shirt behind the seat etc. I almost always leave the keys in the ignition just to tempt a thief!  I live in a pretty small town and every cop within 50 miles knows my big truck so let the thief try and get away.

Come on up, you wont get far!  Any time I let someone drive my truck they get pulled over because as a rule I dont let anyone drive my truck at all.  Like I said its kinda nice being in a pretty small town the cops know me and my truck real well and they watch out for those that they know.

So that means you get an over priced steering wheel with this device to try and justify the rediculous price

I think when my cousin installed that device he was considering the investment at hand,"84 Runner with dual cases and a few other mods", the price for the security steering device, alarm system, and keyless entry were small in comparison to losing a whole rig. It was his daily driver in Fresno and Toyotas are a favorite ahmongst"hint" a certain minority group of thieves. :nerv: :)

Yes BigMike perhaps your right. I forget how much Fresno has changed since my departure in 1995. :smack: It's a whole different world in the thriving metropolis of Coalinga. :)

I am sure that it was a good investment for sure, any security is better than none , but I'm also sure it was pricey too
