84 won't go into fifth gear.
« on: Dec 06, 2007, 06:50:29 PM »
For some reason, my wifes 84 truck won't go into fifth gear anymore.

The G52 that was upgraded to a G54 when it was rebuilt has very few miles on it. After we put the rebuilt tranny with the new stiff pressure plate/clutch into her truck, she found it was to much of a problem to drive in traffic and it rarely gets driven. I doubt if the truck has had 10 tanks of gas through it since the tranny was installed.

When driving down the road and shifting into 5th, it acts like it is in neutral when the clutch is let out. If I apply pressure to the shifter and let the clutch out, it grinds.

If I put it into 5th with the engine not running, then start the engine and let the clutch out while applying pressure to the shifter, it grinds. If I do the same thing without applying pressure to the shifter and let the clutch out, it acts like it is in neutral.

It feels like it is shifting perfectly until the clutch is let out and then there is nothing there.

I have the console cover and shifter boot removed and there is no difference.

Any ideas?

Thanks
Ken

who rebuilt/"upgraded" it? it could be syncros maybe? or maybe it just wasn't put back together right. why wasn't it very good to drive in traffic? i've got a ceramic clutch in mine and it's fine once you get used to it. don't know really i'm not much of a tranny person but i do like to learn.
lets not and say we did.

It was rebuilt by a very reputable company that has a 1 year unlimited milage warranty. We have had the tranny for 2 years and since she didn't like the stiff pressure plate and non slip clutch in traffic, I bought her a car with an automatic and the truck has pretty much sat in the driveway most of the last 2 years. I drove it for a while when my truck went down, but I would bet that the tranny has closer to a thousand miles than two thousand on it.

It was flawless when I last drove it a couple months ago, so I was baffled when my son said it wouldn't go into 5th when he took the truck out ???

If my Son had thrashed the truck (which he says he didn't do) I could believe 1st or 2nd gear or the rear end going out, but 5th gear on a stock 22R with 250,000 miles  I don't get it.

i've been pretty harsh on my truck. 84 22r with a G52 and the only real thing that's really happened is that now my 3rd gear will grind a bit when i try to shift quick with high RPMs. and i haven't had my tranny rebuilt or anything but a new clutches and pressure plates and bearings. my truck has got 195,400 miles. not sure what to tell you. can you remember the name of the place.
lets not and say we did.

Mine does the same thing when shifiting into 3rd. If I am above 4000 rpm, it will grind a little. As far as I know, I don't have a rebuilt transmission, just a new clutch, with 156000 on it. I read somewhere about a similar problem, but I can't remember what they found out. Sorry I couldn't help.

The place that did the rebuild is very well known by 4x4 people, but I want to leave their name out of this thread.

The tranny has performed perfectly up to this time. The more I think about it, the more I'm starting to believe that the shift fork is bent, BUT HOW?

The shifter goes into each location as it should , only 5th gear is not there unless you keep pushing the shifter forward after the clutch is out and then it grinds just like it would if you tried shift into any gear from neutral with out using the clutch.

How hard is it to replace a 5th gear shift fork on a Toyota tranny?

Thanks
Ken

pull the shifter cover,I think it should be in neutral,if its bent you should be able to see it,maybe caused by a quick shift, just a guess

Make sure you have a good shifter seat. Or then maybe the 5th gear could be comming loose and backing off away from the slider.

As I recall the fifth gear is the easiest to fix it is in the back half of the case, so you wouldn't have to take the main gear box apart. syncros sound like the problem. I am not a trans guy but my dodge has been in the shop 3 times this year for a bad syncro ring (machine error in syncro)
Let us know what you find. either way you are gonna be dropping the trans.

GOOD LUCK
