4.88 gear?
« on: May 25, 2004, 02:56:56 AM »
this might be a dumb question, but i need to learn. I got a 79 pickup, and 33s on it, and will 4.88 gears, make me crawl slower, or higher highway speeds, or what??? If not, whats the easist way to crawl a little slower?. One more thing, is the All Pro off road Extreame lifts, any good???

they'll pick up the slack for those 33s.  theoretically it'll lower your top speed but our engines aren't really powerful enough to worry about that.  with my stock 4.38s my top speed is about 65 on flat ground with 31s.  then again my engine is 1/3 the way to a million miles without a rebuild

for most trucks 4.88s and 33s will get your speedo back on track too, with a '79-80 pickup like ours if you want to do that you'd either need to swap in a speedo gear from an '82-up truck('81 had 3.90s in them) or go to 5.29s if you want to get your speedometer closer to stock

I've got 4:88s with 33s in my 83. it runs alittle high, RPM wise on the freeway.  speedo is off by about 6 mph @ 65. shows 70@65. and it did slow my crawl down abit. but mostly helped with starting out in frist gear. I think 4:56 will get you back to "stock".
A good day working, that's just sick :reg:

Basicly the higher number is a lower gear and will be better from crawling..  Thats why so many run the duel case to double the reduction in 4low..  so you go from a stock 37.1 crawl ratio  then change gears, say 4.88 in your case and now your at 44.1..well now you add t-case gears OR a duel case and your at about a 100.1..higher gear for top end,,,4.10, 3.90 and so on..

Tire size also effects crawl ratio..so when I say thats your stock ratio thats with stock tires..As the tire size gets bigger your ACTUAL ratio drops..Thats whay with 4.88 and 33 tires your right back wher you started. So duel case your rig or get some transfercase gears..Hope that helps some

A friend of mine is running All Pro's Extreme lift and It is nice. I think it is  one of the nicest kits that you can get off the shelf without haveing to special order custom springs. I am only refering to the springs though, I don't know about the hysteer, and the other components. But the springs are very nice for a off the shelf spring kit. But they can be out done by customs springs

thanks a bunch guys, I kind of just wanted to get All pros springs, and long travel shock loops. But All Pro said you need the hy-steer kit too. And for 79s you need to buy a whole new box, so its a lot of $$

I could answer all your questions but it would take awhile, the easiest answer is to look at both my $300 thread from the begining and Kyotas 83 buildup.  Between both threads there are more answers then you have asked so far.

i might just go cheap and stick with push pull steering for now and find a different box(mine pisses fluid).  i don't think my truck is gonna need any insane flex for what i do for the most part.  i'm just scared of breaking a j arm  :nerv:
