California Redemtion Value (CRV)
« on: Nov 30, 2007, 09:25:09 AM »
Anybody really know what this is? I know it adds  :twocents: to my beer purchases, and I was under the impression that you were supposed to be able to get $0.05 back if you returned the bottle/can, but when I tried to, the chicky behind the counter looked at me like I had just farted.

So, is this really just a disguised tax, or is it really an incentive to recycle? And, if you really are supoosed to get  :twocents: back, how do you go about doing that? Are there only certain places that do it?

When I lived in New York, they had recycling machines where you could put the can/bottle in the opening, and it would spit out a credit voucher for use in the store. Seems like a good way of doing it.

I was under the impression that California had no redeeming value...Oh well.  :cheese:

Did you go to a recycler?  When you do, make sure you tell them you want to get the redemption value of each bottle individually.  They'll be pissy, but supposedly you're supposed to get the full crv back.

I bet they would!  I hardly ever go, but when I do it usually involves at least a couple trash bags full of crushed cans/plastic bottles...    :gap:

This might help

http://www.ehow.com/how_2117462_recycle-using-california-redemption-value.html

Thanks, good link. I do take them to the "bulk" recycler, but it seems that you don't get the same as what it costs. I'm sure the recycler gets their money out of it!

I was just talking with an older gentleman at work who's run our store for a looong time.  He said he did the math before turning in his bottles a couple times and knew what he was supposed to get back.  He also weighed his cans and knew the same.  He ended up getting shorted substantially both times.  2nd time he called the recycler on it and he said the only way to do that was if he counted each bottle and gave him the redemption value for each.  The recycler was pissed cause he asked him to do it that way then, and he had to start all over.  They also aren't allowed to charge you for dirt, water or any contamination without checking them individually for it.

In Oregon we have the bottle and can return machines.  I miss when the kids counted them out for you.  I remember when we had a return by weight, and people would put sand in each can and smash them.  Triples the weight of each can, until the state caught on!
