 I started this project about three years ago when i purchased this truck as my first vehicle when I was 15.
What is done right now:
4.3 L Engine Swap
SAS w/ '85 Front Hy pinion with 27 spline longs with ARB, 4.88's
8" rear from yota-yard built with chromoly shafts and  detroit, 4.88's
37" MTR's
Custom Flat Bed which doubles as my air tank
Stock 5 speed
Stock T-case

My tentative idea for the future:
T-Case, Gearing-
Marlin Crawler TS™ 4.70 Gear Set
OR should I save and Go for duals????

Front axle-
30 Spline Longs
Complete rebuild since my front seals are bad... those new ones are looking tempting

Protection-
Marlin Crawler front bumper
Marlin Crawler Cage Kit or should i do an EXO?
Bud built cross member
Winch

Interior-
Mastercraft 5-points
Corrbeau Seats

Since i am poor as  :censored: and in college this will take me a long time. I would like to hear any input that you guys have since i am still learning.

:welcome: to :turtle: . sounds like you got a good start on you truck. your going to need a few more post so you can post pics. and i think your going to have to use photobucket.  If it was me i would skip the 4.70 gear and do duels. then once you get the $$$$$$ get some 4.70 gears for the rear case. if your going to be rebuilding your front axle. i would get some longs for it while its apart if the $$$ is there to spend. if not just run it stock and use a soft foot.

Easy...well kinda. I got my bell housing and bolt-in engine mounts from Advance Adapters, along with the starter and clutch. The engine with low miles and that didn't have major leaks on the bottom end was a pain to find. I got it out of a 2wd astro van :). Rebuilt the top end and bolted her in, Easy to install if you remove the grill and cut the front clip out and then weld it back in. Computer and all the wiring were from Howell and are idiot proof cause everything is labeled and it ties in well with the ignition. Other than that a few gauges and a ton of my time i now feel like i have a V8. Great low end torque. Oh and I would recommend a TBI fuel injection just because it is easy to work on compared to the CPI and later direct injection, way to much electronics for me

I have heard bad things about roll overs and flops moving the cage in contact with the body. My flat bed already taps my cab , my fault on that one. Ever heard that?

Well, obviously having dual cases adds cost....longer front driveshaft---which has allowed me to run a standard third member housing opposed to the "gotta have high pinion" housing if you went with a single case....never had a problem yet, I do have Marlin 8" slip spline. You'll have to have rear driveshaft shortened and that'll give you a better angle for trail use as well. Having a94'ex-cab this serves me well.

Best of all, you dont have to wind out your stock t-case on the trail as one does with single regeared case when you start driving 25ish on the trail.
Also, it sure is nice to be on a trail that may be a fire road like situation, not be in 4wheel drive yet find it desirable to shift the front case forward and now your in 2-wheel drive LOW for a pesky obstacle or whatever...... it's a feature you'll never regret (if you have it)  or later wish you did.  Like I said buddy, it comes down to cost & that is many times the deciding factor, it was for me for many years.

Whether you have crawler gears in a single case or you go dual case.....I know people who are VERY happy with both applications.. You definately have started with a SUPER foundation and I wish you the best.

IMO, if $$$ is a concern, the  :turtle: case gears is a worthy investment.

Here is what I ran on my 85 4Runner:

When I got the truck, I ran 32s, stock 4.10s, and 4.0  :turtle: case gears. I could do 50mph in 4low, 5th gear but that was WINDING it out. My crawl ratio was pretty damn good.

I lifted it, went 5.29s, 35s and did a drop box (1.5" foreward, 2" drop). Kept the single case with gears. My crawl ratio was now very close to my friends with stock dual cases. Pinion angle was not extreme and worked well (you have a high pinion so you are set). I made a custom front square driveshaft out of my old 85 front shaft. Top speed in 4 low - 22 or 23 mph max. Now I had to shift into 4 High to go faster than 20 basicaly.

Finaly, I now have dual cases with 4.0 case gears in the rear case and 5.29s w/ 35s. I havnt tested it out cause we arent going to be done until tomorow.

Anyway, the 4.0 (or 4.7) case gears are a worthy investment considering the cost of new front and rear drivelines (front lengthened, rear shortened), the cost of the adapter, second tcase and instalation (depending on your own abilities here) are far higher than the cost of putting gears in a single tcase. Not to mention, you can obtain a crawl nearly comprable to dual cases, run it, and then put duals in and you already have case gears installed. Now you are really low....

I think doing case gears before duals is a good idea. I have been running 4.0s for 3 years and I only just installed dual cases today for the added gear choices.

As for exo over incab, the best thing to consider is added weight. An exo cage is going to signifigantly cut down on power and fuel economy. If fuel cost and a slight lack of power from extra weight isnt a concern, exo it. the MC in cab kit is sick and a good deal though. All comes down to how much you want to spend and how valuable your pretty sheetmetal is :D

Ha not to worried about in February this year i rolled it going 50 mph after the 30 in. blizzard that hit CO at 1:30 in the morning. I spent $200 for a new fender and driver door cause my dad made me repair it:(. I thought it looked bada$$ with the damage

After the roll. New door and fender and matched the paint. I was impressed how it turned out with the junkyard parts

Yeah looks good. Did you just flop it on its side? My gf flopped her 4runner on its side on pavement in a nasty hail storm and you could barely tell. Just needed a new fender

Nah full roll over, i happened in a snowdrift and it ended on a plowed dirt road which smashed the hell out of my door and fender. Rolled it back up and drove the last two miles home to the ranch. Good night... Bad ending

worst part was all the oil that ended up in my top end, but gave me an excuse to tune my engine up :). Two months later the lame ford 9in driver outer seal blew and i spent $$$ fixing that and then i broke the same axle two weeks later. Oh well though i built a new toy 8 from the ground up and i am very happy with that
