Carb Needed......
« on: Nov 27, 2007, 11:19:57 AM »
Alright, Here's the deal.

I have an '82 4x4 LB.  Got the motor, tranny, carb rebuilt back in '04.  Only have about 10,000mi on it since then.  Problem is that there is something wrong with the carb(stock Aisin carb).  Truck will not idle, but otherwise seems OK.  So I have two options....

1: Rebuild the stock carb again and hope it works :shakehead:

2: Get a Weber... Looking at a 32/36 or a 34/34  :beerchug:

Any advise is greatly apprecieted.  I DO NEED TO PASS EMISSIONS!!!  My truck is a CA model with all the hookups.  My main concern is better reliability, mileage, and a modest increase in power.  Not looking at the 38.

Thanks, Daniel Z

Have you tested the Idle Cut Solenoid? Try wiring it temporarily to a hot 12v source and listen to see if it clicks. If it does, then the solenoid is probably good, just the vacuum and such that controls it is bad. Since you don't need emissions, you can wire it to a switched 12v source, instead of the factory plug.

If you get another carb, there's no guarantee that it will fix all your problems, as it may have it's own problems. You'd probably have to rebuild a different one before you swap them anyways, unless you buy a brand new one.

yeah i got a rebuilt carb and had to take it apart and adjust it before it would run right. that 86 carb may be a good deal. my 86 got 25 mpg stock.

Since it's the stock Aisin carb, have you drilled out the air fuel mixture screw and adjusted it.  If is located on the base of the carb on the passenger side.  Also, if it won't idle when cold, but does once the engine warms up, then it's probable the AAP diaphram.

It has no problem in the cold... Just randomly decides to not idle.  Being a 5spd it is a pain for DD when it does this.  It is not going to pass emissions.  I have been thinking about a Weber for sometime and not sure yet.  I think that the guys that did the rebuild messed something up.  Ran for 6 months (past warranty) and then stopped idling.  Every now and then the truck will idle and when it does it is smooth as glass, but it is rare for it to idle.  Part of me want to be done with the stock carb.

How about the Cali Smog Legal one.... Part No. K 8749?

http://www.alamomotorsports.com/weber/toyota_carb.html

Anyone have any other recommendations.... Need to get this issue resolved.   Will a weber like this give better mileage than the stock carb?

Thanks, Daniel Z

Before my rebuild..... 19mpg.  After the rebuild 14-15mpg.....

My biggest concerns are emissions, reliability and drivability.  My current stock carb has none of these.

when i smogged my rig i found that the wire to the shut off solenoid was rotten in the middle.  didn't idle good at all. should have voltage to it when you turn the ignition on. some have a ground too. i made some test leads to figure out what was going on.

Think that could explain why mine will usually not idle at all? :dunno:

could be .. id check it for power with the key on.. but some systems also use the computer to turn the ground off and on depending on speed and rpm.  you can jump the power and ground and see if effects your idle.

K 8749 seems to be the 22r equivelant to what I have on my 20r head.  California smog legal.  Runs like poo when smog legal but passes, then make some adjustments/changes and it'll run better, but it doesn't like inclines.
