Transfercase styles
« on: May 25, 2004, 10:17:55 AM »
I have a few questions regarding 4cyl. T-Cases
What is the deal with the short style cases versus the tall style case as stated here:http://www.marlincrawler.com/tcaseinfo.html
What is the difference?

What is a PTO T-Case, and what did it come in?

Finally, how can you identify that older stronger output shafts that came in the early model T-Cases?

I realize that for the most part the T-Cases are prietty similar, but this link started making me wonder what the differences were.

pto means power take off, it means you can run pto accessories like a winch, pumps etc.  think of it as a place to put another driveshaft out the side.  i've never seen a toyota pto capable case but i know they're around.

All 79-4/83 t-cases have a short case [the short case gasket has two holes for the shift rod bores].
Tall cases 5/83-8/95, use a gasket will an oval hole so the forward shift rods will fit thur the gasket.
These cases can be interchanged, however the gasket at the top of the case will only seal by 1/8".

The "power take off" t-case was only found on factory built service trucks. I have two of them. One is in my truck and came from an engine importer. This was the only one he has ever seen and was on the back of a diesel transmission.
My secound unit is brand new and came from a dealer inTexas. It was special orded but never put into service.

The better, softer t-case output shafts [79-83] cannot be told apart from the later shafts [84-95] which have added nickle and a deeper heat treat that makes them more brittle.
