A lot more. I went through 3 CVs in less than a month with a lockrite up front when my truck was still IFS. I was on 33s all terrains at the time.

well i havent broken anything yet, i usually take it pretty easy on the skinny pedal. i'm running 31" tires and not planning on going any larger, just looking to help out offroad capability.

I think I'm going to weld the front on my 89 pick up that I just got. This truck will see mostly road but will have trips to Pismo Beach for some sand riding. I just don't want to dump too much money into my dd but want a little more traction help. I think you will be good with 31's  :twocents:

I think that you would receive much more benefit if you welded the spiders in the rear. :twocents:

i usually take it pretty easy on the skinny pedal.

I was far from romping it when they let loose on me. I was seriously pissed and decided to give IFS the finger for good.

Have you ever steered with a spool/welded front in 4 wheel drive?

I had my welded on my stock 95 on 31's. Didn't break anything, it helped out ALOT. But the steering sucked, made it a bit harder. But I would do it again if I had to.

With 31's I don't thnk it will be too bad, but you will definately feel the difference, it will be harder to steer.

With my ARB locked and 35x13.5's it is impossible to steer on some obstacles...I have to unlock the front usually to get over an obstacle that the rear is now trying just to steer.  Steering radius sucks!  Personally, I would never weld the front in fear of breaking a birfield or having to "Austin Powers" a lot of corners.  I think the only thing that I will ever do in the front is a selectable locker...whether it be electric or air...unless I have hydro steering, then I would do a locker but not weld or spool it.  Just my  :twocents:

no worries, made very valid points though about steering (which is a big concern).

alot of differant views, couple reasons i'm thinking about it.
this is a daily driver and highway driven vehicle. see's about half its time off the pavement.
when i'm out rock crawling i usually have 1 front wheel off the ground (no travel) until the weight of the front end rocks it foreward enough to put the wheel that was airborne back on the ground. where this becomes a problem is when the truck leans far enough to pull the opposite side rear tire off the ground, being stock with open diffs yall get the idea. so i have to use more skinny pedal than i want in order to have enough momentum to roll through these area's.
money is tight otherwise i'd buy a locker for the rear (preferably selectable) and leave it there.

can hydraulic assist me setup on IFS? i can get a ram for pretty cheap. just trying to figure out the best way to get more traction on a tight budget.

I've never seen anyone do hydro to and IFS rig, but even if you could I wouldn't if you are like 90% freeway driving. If you think you can deal with the whole steering situation and you aren't going to get crazy with the skinny pedal and break stuff then I'd go for it.

My 87 (had) 31s and ifs.... I welded mine... sucked in 4wd on tight dry obstacles, but not bad in the mud. But I agree with SILVER..... probably benefit you more.

I had a friend that ran a lock right locker on his ifs 4runner that worked well with 35's. The other tech guys will tell you to go ARB, but a lock right will work, cost less, and you still will be able to have your daily driver.
