overheating problem!! up dated!!!
« on: Oct 23, 2007, 08:13:45 PM »
my girlfriend has a 89 Toyota pu. 22re it keeps overheating the oil is normal what could be making it overheat? (yes there is water in the radiator) is there any thing that can help me locate the problem or point me in the direction.

up date- well i begin messing with it i checked all fluids i checked for leaks (everything was perfect) no rust on cap green as can be!! now here is the down fall i drove it around town for about an hour (fast slow 4 wheel drive low high) and this is the highest i can get it to rise

could be any number of things, how is the condition of the coolant? any known issues? is there a lot of corrosion or scale? how is the thermostat? when was the last tiem the system was flushed?

if it continues to overheat and continues to be driven, eventually the head gasket is going to go out, and will allow mixing of luids.....

Step 1: check all fluids. make sure everything is full (or to the full mark).

step 2: LEAVE THE RADIATOR CAP OFF. start the engine and let it idle. watch the water in the radiator. As the engine warms up, it will push a small amount of water out of the top. This is normal. If it pushes a lot of water out, then followed by bubbles, your hg is blown. if not, keep going.

Step 3: continue watching the water. when the engine gets to operating temp, the thermostat will open and you will see the water flowing by the opening in the radiator. if not, thermostat is defective. replace it. If you do see a steady flow, then the water pump is good

The thermostat housing is to the right of the E on the intake manifold. remove the 2 bolts holding it, and gently tap the housing to release the rubber seal. NOTE THE POSITION IT IS INSTALLED. The "can" should be pointed down and the ^ should be pointed up. Reinstall a new one (with a new gasket) in this position.

This is about as basic as I can make it, if it helps.
It ain't worth doin' if you don't have to clean up afterwards!

Build it, break it, fix it, repeat until your wallet is empty.

make sure your  belts are ON.
also it should have a clutch fan, check and make sure it is working properly,
Take dirtchickens advise and get a manual.
In my opinion its
-defective waterpump belt
-sticking or faulty thermostat
-clutch fan not operating properly
-pluged radiator
Guesing by it being a 89 Id think the radiator is fine but there my gueses. goodluck.

Ghetto-
We need to know when exactly is it over-heating.....while it's sitting there idling?....going up long grades?....
I will take a shot at finishing your description of the problem. Let me know if I nailed it.

.....I don't know why it's overheating. IThe temp gauge seems to climb very fast within a couple minutes of getting onto the highway. It happens so quickly that I don't know it until I see it's just barely touching the red mark. It doesn't go much higher, it just stays there. It seems ok driving around town. Sometimes it starts to happen on long hills. Please point me in the right direction. thanks :beerchug:

It's your radiator. Water flow issue thru the core. Rodding is not likely to help. Get a new one. ZUK

and while I was replacing my radiator, I would also do;

Water Pump
Thermostat
Primary hoses and clamps
Belts
Inspect the install of the Temp sending unit

good luck

sounds like you need to let her drive and you ride along,  :yikes: so that you can see her driving style, power demands, and situation when it overheats.

My wife had a camaro 350 that would always overheat on her :maddest: , but I drove it about 40 miles one hot afternoon, and it never passed 2/3rds of normal range :dunno: .(my wife has a lead foot!) :burnout:
