BUBBA

Thanks guys for all the concern.Trucking wasn't what caused this but it didn't help either. They ran a blood test to check my sugar levels for the last three months and determined that it had been happening for awhile. The clot in my leg was caused by the diabetes. So now my life will have to change.I'll have to take better care of myself.Which means not eating any good stuff :rivers: .But i guess if i wanna live then it's what I must do.Hopefully I'll get to go home tomorrow, but im not gonna hold my breath.

Glad to hear your doing OK!.

DVT is potentially dangerous, and you'll need to be careful about sitting for prolonged periods of time, as it could happen again. You should talk to your doc about doing some blood testing to see if you have what's called a "hypercoagulable state". Typically comes from having a deficiencey in some of the clotting factor protiens. DM can also put you in this state, so it's possible that the DM just put you over the edge. If you have one of these clotting disorders, sometimes they will put in a "greenfield filter" to prevent clots from the legs getting to the heart, lungs or brain.

Typically they will put you on a drug called Coumadin (warfarin), which can be very difficult to manage. Unfortunatly, this drug interacts with just about every other medicine known, which can make it very difficult to keep at a steady state. It is also affected by several foods, so check out these sites:

http://www.drugs.com/Coumadin/index.html

http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/406896

Should give you a fairly good overview of what to look out for. They will need to monitor your INR (International Normalization Ratio) to make sure your adequatly treated, but not over treated. Typical INR for post DVT treatment is between 2.0 and 3.0. It will take some time to get your INR stabilized, and you'll be getting blood draws for quite some time until it is. Feel free to PM me if you'd like more info or have questions. We can also talk about DM if you want. (Don't want to bore everyone to tears)

Good luck, and I'm glad your feeling better.

Thanks for the info Erik. They do have me on Coumadin. So far I'm doing well on it.They have me on a strict diet to which I am sticking to like glue. They also have me on Metformin for my sugar. It's not as hard as I had imagined it would be changing my diet. The only problem im having now is quitting smoking. The doc gave me a prescription for Chantix.I start that today so hopefully by this time next week I'll be smoke free aswell.

They also did a test called hemoglobin a1c i think,mine came back 9.5 .

On the road to recovery,I will survive.

Whew, 9.5 is a bit on the high side. Our lab reference is below 6.5, so it seems you have a way to go. Go to hear about Chantix as well, I've had about 100% success rate with MOTIVATED quiters. Did your doc get you their phone number to enroll in a cessation program? Let me know if not, I have the number at the office.

Metformin is a mainstay of type II DM, He'll prolly watch your sugars for a few weeks, then may increase the dose or add another med if your sugars aren't back in to range. Diet and excercise are going to be key! Ask if your doc will refer you to a dietician to they can help you make dietary changes that make sense. (they will have much more time to sit and talk with you, and answer specific questions).

Glad to hear your doing well.
