The good and the bad about this Taco?
« on: Oct 10, 2007, 10:21:23 AM »
Alot of you hae seen it and I like it. I am wondering a few things...I know I'd want detroits F/R and 5.38s, but after that how reliable can this rig be? I'd run 38" KM2s on H2s probably. Any advice is surely welcome, especially on the dual cases, tranny and what is the wheelbase on a reg cab taco? I mainly want to make it a streetable rig I can run to the trails and maybe 15-20 miles down the hwy, etc..

Specs:

1. Is it worth $7500?

2. Should it be reliable with 38s-39.5s?

3. What are its weak points? t-cases? tranny?

4. How does a lincoln locked front end with manual hubs ride on-road?

He would plan to stay 5.13s or go 5.38s and add Detroits F/R and upgrade front shafts/joints.

Specs:

2000 Toyota Tacoma
2.7 liter w/ 77,xxx miles
W59 tranny
mini truck dual cases with marlin adaptors
Bud Built crossmember
Allpro transfercase e-brake
high angle front driveshaft
rear shaft is 3" .250 wall.
tjm front bumper w/ warn m8000
tube bed with led lights
Kenwood CD/MP3
CB, can't remember the brand
Hand throttle on shifter
sunroof
guage cluster was swapped out of v6 truck, so it has tach and all the other guages.
AC blows good and cold

Newest upgrades:
rockstomper 1-ton master cylinder and adapter
dana 60 front 5.13 welded all new bearings
high angle driveline dana 60 to toyota flange adapter
rebuilt front end except kingpins
m2w high steer arms (same as btf arms)
heim joints
1 1/2 d.o.m. for steering
hydro assist steering w/ extra capacity reservoir
front diff guard(not installed)
steering cooler
carolina driveline rear shaft w/ a true 9 inch slip
39.5 iroks 90%tread
re-centered hummer beadlocks
all new brakes

14 bolt rear
5.13 gears
all new bearings
full spool
btf disc brake conversion
diy super thick cover.(looks like btf thick cover)

the pass side door has some character (laid her into a tree) now, but the window rolls up and down and the door still locks

that truck is pretty damn solid if you ask me.  my truck is VERY similar and ive been driving it 500+ miles a week without issues.  it seems pretty ready how it is and 5.13's and 39.5's wont be bad at all.  a welded front diff wont matter on the street because thats what the hubs are for, unlock them.

That was my good friend's truck before this guy got it.  It was his dd for a while, but that was on Toyota axles and 36's.  I haven't seen it since the new owner swapped in the tons, so I don't know how it turned out.

Well I know the bellhousing was cracked, the new owner put a new one in and new clutch.

I was wondering if you knew how the welds are and if the bed, etc is pretty decent?  (before the new owner got it?) Sorry, I am just not able to see it for 1-2 weeks since I am out here in houston, TX at MD Anderson.

Also I am told it might be good to go with a chromo output shaft on the t-case?
