Length of splines on solid axle front driveshaft?
« on: Sep 28, 2007, 07:56:56 AM »
I lifted the front of my 85 4runner and now I can see about 1/4" of an inch of splines in my front driveshaft.  Ive looked all over the net and I cant seem to find out how much spline there is on a front driveshaft...  anybody know?

Thanks

Step 1: Remove 4 bolts holding on driveshaft (you pick which side)
Step 2: Remove driveshaft
Step 3: Measure Splines
Step 4: Post up thanking me for the instructions.

If it is a stock slip it is about six inches. If you have any kind of flex in the front end it needs to be longer. I have been running a fourteen inch slip for many years.

During testing I flexed the crap out of my front every way I could think of and I never saw any more spline, usually the slip would result in me seeing no spline at all.

I got a quote for lengthening at a local shop... only $85 plus material

If you wheel it, you will have trouble.  When your front axle is under power and has decent traction, it will tend to walk forward (kinda like axle wrap)  It will pull the diff. down and therefore pull the front driveshaft apart.

When I first build my first front drive shaft........  I had over 5 inches of out travel and it pulled apart on me 3 times on one weekend.  Needless to say, I made another one with more "overlap".
Three Inches of Dangling Fuery and a Weedeater a$$!
