Topic: Solid Front Axle

I know that 85 is the preffered axle for SAS I already did my truck and am looking for an axle for my buddies 92. I found an 84 axle and am pretty sure it is the same as the 85 just wanted to double check.

84 and 85 are essentially the same axle.  They both have the "full" gusset.

EDIT: For those that actually search.  From what I know the 79 axle has lno gusseting.  80-83 had the gusseting all the way to the u-bolts.  84 and 85 had the full gusset to the enge of the tube. 

If I was looking for an axle I would find one that is straight I wouldnt waste my time looking for that elusive 84-85 axle only.  Many people think they are worth big $$$ compared to the rest, but just add your own gusset to the top of the housing and enjoy the added ground clearance.

Yes, both have the same gusset, same strength.

I think once you put a gusset on the top they will be no different in strength. The older the axle the more leaky all the seal areas will be. Many steering knuckles I've seen are very pitted with rust holes due to lack of maintenance and let the water in.
