IFS To solid front axle
« on: Apr 10, 2007, 04:50:56 PM »
I was thinking about changing the irs to a solid front axle. Is this a hard job? I was also thinking about putting 1/2 ton chevy axles on it because they are wider. Any imput on this?

It's not easy but it's not rocket science either. It all depends on you mechanical ability. If you can weld and turn wrenches you'll be fine. I just did mine a few weeks ago.

If you want the extra width go for it but you'll have to sink a boat load of money to get the axles up to snuff. Go Toyota axles with 30 spline Longs and forget it.

yeah pretty much the SAS is pretty easy. I did mine in 5.5 hrs. I did it and am glad I did. IFS sucked. Especailly going from a SA truck to an IFS truck.

Id go full widths axles. I hate my toyota axles. I want to do a D44 and 14B in mine. What axles are they. 10B front and 12B rear?

Damn you must be the fastest swapper alive. 5 1/2 hours doesnt leave much time for fitting/measuring. You must have ripped it off and tacked it all up with speedy gonzales quickness. Seriously to those of us that take our time it ussaully uses up about a week for removal of the IFS and install of the SA.

X2   I find 5.5 hrs extremely hard to believe, unless he had a couple of buddy's helping, and two welders.

Had the slugs welded in. Front spring hanger welded in already. 3 people helping. 1 oxy/acetylene torch. Cut it off. Bolted it on. Believe me if you want to, or not, I dont care. It didnt take more then 3 hrs total to get the slugs for the shackles welded in and the front spring hanger welded on. I took my time, my work isnt crap so dont say that it is or that its not measured correctly. It drives striaght down the road too. Its not rocket science. So if you really want to call it 8.5 hrs instead, go ahead.

i was there and it was about 5.5 hours. he had the axle all set up ready to go, and the hanger and shackle tubes all welded on. so there was prep time done a few days before but the actual swap was 5.5 hours

for the haters above, it wouldnt take a week to remove IFS unless your slower then a slug and didnt know what you were doing...thats neither here nor there, but if you saw the work of that SAS then you wouldnt give him a hard time, and for taking 5.5 or 8.5 depending on which time you would rather believe, you would be amazed at it...thats my schpiel about it

Well, having everything prepped, and having the IFS removed and the hangers and tubes already welded in is part of the swap and however long this took counts. Plus if there were three of you than the 5.5 or 8.5 is X 3 + 1 = 4 times the hrs.
When you say you did yours in 5.5 hrs it is misleading, when you do an SAS the time it takes includes everything all the disassembly and assembly time. I am not trying to bad mouth you, just make a point.

by no means was i trying to discount your ability. More or less i was saying that if you did do it in 5.5 hours it would have been a quick job, nothing a average joe could do his first time. I was adding all the prep work in too but i can understand your point with the rolling in IFS and leaving SA. Nonethe less Oldyeller, if this is going to be your first time ussing a torch or welder it might take sometime, As far as specs go it all depends on what you using. Between Here, Pirate, and TTORA you should be able to find everything you'll ever need to know under a simple search.

Once again, the time it take to do an SAS includes all work done before or after.
