Buying a rig this weekend... Need some tech info on carbs
« on: Sep 21, 2007, 01:58:21 PM »
Hey everyone,

I'm buying my first crawling rig, just a week after being to my first event (MCR6).  It's an early Toyota setup for Chevy small block.  It also has full-size axles, springs etc.  I'm dropping in my 350, and planning a 70064 or th400 with the NP203 and 205 dual t-cases.

My questions is:  What is the best carb to use for crawling with a small block?

I have several carbs to choose from or sell if these don't work:
1. Edelbrock 1405 w/ 1406 electric choke
2. Several Holleys, can't remember model #s'

I would think that a holley would need some sort of metering plate so the fuel doesn't just dump out of the bowls.  I'm not sure about the Edelbrock though.

The best carb for a crawling rig is one on propane. Seriously, if it is going to be a trail only rig, or if Nevada smog laws are nonexistent  :dunno: run a propane set up from one of the many vendors and you can drive it upside down. :twocents:

I never thougth of propane... that's a good idea.  I do want to be able to drive it on the street, but I'm almost positive propane is a legal fuel in NV or I'll just get a PO box out in the middle of B.F.E. and get around smog all together.

what kind of full width axles are you running with this V8?

pleae don't say D44 or 10 bolt... you'll be asking for trouble.

I agree w/ Shortty.. go with propane and don't look back.. i've modded my carb to death and it still dies on real steep inclines.

Hey Shamb,

I've got Dana 60's now, and I'm going to keep my eyes out for a set of Rockwells in the future.  I looked at a few propane webistes that had duel fuel system that I liked.  Run gas on the highway and propane on the trail. It's a little pricey, but looks like a good setup.  Might try to liquidate some of my other racing stuff and get one.
