any vollie depts near you?  That should count as experience.  What're your long term goals? Eventually get on with a city dept?  Sometimes its just a matter of patience and perseverance.  Especially now, with the way the economy is going.  Toss some applications up into NV, might be too late, but a lot of the people I work with spend some time with BLM, USFS, and NDF, and non of them said it was all that hard to get in.

Thats my next step, Im hoping to do some voulenteer work starting later this month. I put in for a wildland voulenteer position at the highlands fire dept no.22 in flagstaff az, I can get in there but its 130 miles from my house. Im sure I can find some voulenteer work close to or in phx though. My goal for the next 5 years is basically to be full time employed in wildland firefighting, which I know is kinda tough for year round employment.. I dont have a whole lot of intrest in urban, as in phx it is 95+% car accidents and medical emergencies. I am going for my emt cert this fall though, Kinda as something to fall back on, and as a plus for getting on with the hotshots. My long term goal is to move to fight fires in montana, I dont really care what im doing as long as im up there..
this my man lysol, fresh out the joint

steveco.

just work on a engine or a type 2 for the season and get working on the shots for next season. ohh and the shots could have you fill-in anytime they need you. just have to be pack tested.. the apprenticship should be starting up in Sept. again so be on the lookout for that App.

EMT cert is ALWAYS a plus.  Its the same here in Reno, call wise, but we get a good amount of wildland during the summer.  If you get on with a city with a fairly ambitious department, you can get sent out on strike teams, which is fun.  I think we sent crews out 10 or so times last summer, being gone anywhere from 3 days to 3 weeks.  I'd definitely try to get on with an Engine crew, with either your state dept, or USFS.  They've got the best chances of being employed year round, as they do the projects in their districts to prepare for the next season.

looks like im not getting in this season, missed the first round of hires and i dont have my 67hr class so i still wont be able to get late hired unless i can find a 67 hr class wich is slim to none, but i have a shot with Eureka FD so i still have my fingers crossed and praying and training!! lol fyi if you ever want to get hired for a FF1 position or seasonal with the state the one and only key i have seen is to politic or network, go visit and meet EVERY captain in the unit MANY times before they hire and your almost for sure granted a spot, goodluck to everyone this fire season, hope i see some of you guys out there on the line.

If you're willing to relocate for the summer, check out the FS around Vegas.  I've heard they're having problems filling their crews.

I may be looking at that if I get laid off, at least seasonal.

For those of you local to or regular visitors to Reno, feel free to take a look at renoatrisk.org, and if you agree, feel free to contact our city council.  Their contact info is on renoatrisk.org.  They are cutting public safety (PD and Fire) prior to cutting other non essential services.

This does affect both residents and visitors, As of friday, an engine and a truck are going to be decommissioned, leaving 3 trucks and 18 engines to protect a city of 230,000 and a county of another 200,000.

Just last night, I was on Engine  4, which is regularly reduced to a 2 man rescue.  The recue has no water, has no hose, and is intended to be and adjunct to a truck company.  The rescue carries a multitude of extrication and fire related tools.  We had a structure fire last night that had we been a rescue, quite easily could have resulted in a loss of the structure, at the very least the roof.  As it was , we were luckily an engine, and had the water necessary to extinguish the fire quickly, with and end all result that the residents lost very few belongings, and repairs will be easily made.

Do you have a self worth issue? I've never considered PD or FD nonessential!

Politicians worldwide pull this same crap. Our local gaggle of fools (Tucson has the worst city council I have ever seen!) de-funded police and fire...BUT, they let stand a program that basically teaches kids to more effectively express themselves through...GRAFFITI. Thankfully, in their defense, they kept in place another program in Graffiti abatement!

They figure...if they cut REAL, essential services...then crime goes up, response times go up, the voters are fed up (and for the most part stupid) next budget cycle the people will support a tax hike in order to curb the recent rise in crime.
The things that come to those who wait, may be the things left by those who got there first.

I contend that for a nation to try to tax itself into prosperity is like a man standing in a bucket and trying to lift himself up by the handle.

Man, you are on a roll with me aren't you!  :gap:  I forgot a comma I think, either that or I just threw in an extra word.  :smack:

That is essentially what is happening here.  We're regularly running 4 engines short, 1 truck short, and a full station closed.  2 of the engine closures result in 2 man rigs being opened, which greatly reduces our efficiency and level of service.

Of course, this is all due to mismanagement of money, but of course the council would never admit that.

Man that blows. 5 years ago we were going through brown outs, did a bunch of petitioning and got the citizens to vote for minimum staffing requirements. So for 10 years we have all 25 stations open 4 person engines and 5 person trucks. We got really lucky. It will be interesting to see what happens in 5 years if the economy doesnt turn around.

Well say a prayer, have a beer, or whatever it is you do. This is a good buddy of mine who was in the wrong place at the wrong time yesterday. He underwent 4.5 hours of surgery last night and is expected to live but with lots more surgeries and rehab. It's really sad, so stay safe out there brothers.
