I am new at this rockcrawling buisness but very excited to build my first. I hear the 5:29 gears with a locker is the way to go. I dont know what other combo would be better? Do you? Whats the comparison to a true spool locker or welded spider gears? theres gotta be a reason there 300.00 an axle?

are you building a truck to DD  and  rock crawl??  if so  you want selectable,  elocker or a ARB air locker

if its a trail only truck  SPOOL

gear selection depends upon what size tire you plan on running. Typically a 5.29 in the diff = 37" tire... maybe 35"

I'm running 35's on my 81 with Detroit lockers front and rear and i think it is a little to low geared for dd conditions

My truck will be trailered wherever I plan to crawl so I am not too worried about highway speeds. If I go with the marlin 6" whole kit that has 21" of travel what tire/ gear combo will be the best for me? Is this the best kit for the money out there?

personally  if youwant to rockcrawl 6 inches is too much

Marlin himself runs 37" tires  and 4 inch springs

529's  for you and a spool in the rear,  a  aussie locker up front

I agree with Glen, typically for rockcrawling you want to keep a low center of gravity so your wheels stay on the ground as much as possible.


go with as low as a lift as possible and cut to make room for the bigger tires.

yes 4" lift will work with 37's  you may have to tub the firewall back depending on how much up travel you have. Along with some fender trimming.

im runing 35's (soon to be 37's) 3-4 inches of lift, welded rear, aussie up front and 5.29's...works killer.

and its driven often...damn near my DD.

Definetely go with the Aussie!  They are cheap (about $260 shipped to your door),  and very strong. My brother has one in his yota and he loves it.  Get on this  and call em.

I have 35's and 5.29 gears it is a little to low on the gearing.  I haven't had any problems  with clearence with the 4 inch lift.  I should have gone with 37's and as soon aqs these wear out I will jus my
