backing plate removal?
« on: Aug 27, 2007, 09:17:51 PM »
ok, so i am needing to take the backing plate off my rear axle so i can install my sky disc conversion, but it looks like part of the backing plate holds the seal on... so what exactly do i need to remove to install my rear disc conversion?

and do the rear axles have 2 seals at the end? autozone calls for an inner and outer.  :smack:

Remove the "C" clip from the axle

Press the bearing and retainer and backing plate off the axle

Knock/press the four bolts off the backing plate that attaches the axle to the housing.

replace the four bolts/studs back into the bearing cup

Replace the seal/dust cover on the end of the bearing cup that goes towards the axle flange

Knock/Press the bearing and retainer on to the axle

Before installing axles, replace the axle seals in the housing, OEM are the best for seals.

Replace the "C" clip

You are done

I recommend that you replace the axle bearings at this time.

If you do not have a press or access to a press, here is another method of changing axle bearings

Looks a little Primitive Pete, but it works.

I recommend that you change the axle housing seals before you install the axles, OEM seals are the best

There are two seals, the one in the tube and one that is behind the bearing on the axle shaft.  If you're not goingto save the backing plate and the bearings are fine, just knock out the four bolts. (Put a nut on them first to avoid boogering up the threads), and then cut the backing plate with a dremel or grinder or the like.  Pressing out those bearings can be a PITA if you don't have the special tool.

i am gonna just have the shop that is setting up the thirds to install new bearings and seals and then not put the backing plates back on when done...

they are only gonna charge 20 bucks labor per axle, so that is worth it to me.

thanks
