Jason, I've been following this since it started in August.  It's great to hear how well you're doing!  Sounds like it's been quite a challenge but you've been more than up to it.  Congrats on getting halfway through, it's all downhill from here!

Well, I'm getting there!!  After this week, I've got 6 weeks left in my academy, and as of today, I have 29 work days left :woohoo:  I can't wait to get out online.  We're nearing the end of our new training, and going to leave a few weeks of review before our final testing.  This week we're doing high rise evolutions, basically meaning we get to run up a lot of stairs, carry a lot of :pokinit: up the stairs, and then fight fire once we get there.  Next week we're doing some tech rescue stuff, then all we have to do is some vehicle extrication training, and some basic hazmat stuff.  That'll be interesting to say the least.  Our PT has gotten into somewhat of a routine, mon/fri we run stadiums and do 20/25s at UNR stadium.  Tues/thurs, we do obstacle courses and crosstraining type stuff at our drill grounds, and wed we go to a local gym.  Everyonce in a while, they throw in some interesting stuff though, last week we ran the stairs of the Silver Legacy casino twice, 42 floors, with full turnouts and SCBAs.  That was a bit of a workout :gap:

Congrats on the job!

You may have already answered this, but...do you have any idea where you'll be based for a first assignment?

At a fire station?  :dunno:

:gap:

No, not really.  they'll divide the 19 of us between the 3 shifts (A,B, and C) and then we'll get sent out to stations.  They do a rotation of 2 months for FNKs (you figure it out :gap: ) We've got 8 months left on probation after the academy, so we'll get to experience different apparatus at 4 different stations.  After we get off probation, we get to spend a while in a floater pool, where we have to call in on the days we work, and we get sent to different stations depending on their needs.  It'll be a few years before I actually get to bid to a station.

Of course it is!!

Well, 2 weeks to go.  Since I last updated this, we had some water rescue training, learning how to work in a support position with out Water Entry Team.  We also did some live ice rescue training, practicing our entry techniques, and how to pull people out.  Each rig is equiped with a "duck suit"  basically a very thick wetsuit that is sealed on the inside, so it is "mostly" water proof.  The suit itself is fairly warm, aside from the fact that you find out pretty quickly where it leaks.   :yikes:  Due to the time constraints related to rescuing someone who has broken through the ice, this is the only part of water rescue that everyone on the department is trained to technician level in.  Anything else, only the WET crew will actually get in the water.

We also spent a few days working with the Tech rescue crew, which does high and low angle rope rescue, trench rescue, confined space, etc.  We're also trained in a support role for this team, but we got to mess with some of their equipment and actually go into the spaces and stuff that they normally would.  Somehow, I picked up a new nickname along the way, Draino.  I've shocked more than a few people with my ability to wedge my big :moon: into small spaces, and work in them.  I can turn myself around in a 30" tube, and I also managed to crawl through a 30 ft pipe that had an ID of 17.2 inches.  Needless to say, I may be the tech teams newest tunnel rat once I get off probation :gap:

Spent 3 days on extrication, the PnP in sparks was very instrumental in this, they donated about 10 cars to our cause, letting us cut them apart.  The last day we got to run some scenarios with the Truckee Meadows Community College Paramedic class, using them as victims, and having to cut them out of the vehicles, while preforming medical aid as well.  That was a lot of fun.  You don't realize true responsibility and power until you are wielding a tool that can cut or spread with 60K pounds of force, and you're cutting a person out of a car. :disturbed:

Last week we spent 4 days on Hazmat training, once again learning our support roles for the Hazmat team.  We finished the week by being able to get into the Hazmat suits, and running a decon scenario in the RFD regional decon rig.  Reno has a large responsibility when it comes to hazmat, not only are they responsible for the RFD response area (650 sq miles) but they are responsible for Lake Tahoe, and everything lke Tahoe drains into :yikes:  they also go as far east along 80 as fernley, lovelock, and Battle mountain.

This week we're getting our uniforms, our own turnouts (not leftovers) and we're running 2 days of scenarios on a condemned hotel in downtown reno.  We're going to get to do everything except actually putting out fire on a motor lodge, which is going to be a lot of fun.  finally, the week after we take our FF1 and 2 written and practical tests, and graduate!! :woohoo:

We're slowly going to all red.  The green rigs are old country rigs, Reno Fire Dept merged with the Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District in 2000, so we've got all of their equipment, and man their stations now.  Pretty much all our reserve rigs are old TM rigs, and some of the frontline rigs still are TM rigs.  All new stuff is going to be red and white, or red and silver though.

Well, I finished up at my old Station (10) last go around, and started at my new station last Sat.  I'm now at Station 11.  11 houses an engine, a brush rig, a truck, the heavy rescue and USAR trailer, and a boat rig for the Water Entry Team.  I'm on the engine at this station, my last rotation I'll be on Truck 3, which is far busier than Truck 11 :gap:

Here are a few pics of the lovely ladies I get to work with :gap:

the real Engine 10, not the reserve green one.

My sis came up to visit, so I took her to the station when I was still at 10

Her in the brush rig

Engine 11

I love these old engines!!

My seat(s) Not a lot of room.  Yes, my shoulders hit both the window and the doghouse when I'm sitting in either seat, I can sit facing forward or backward.  Most medicals I sit facing forward, but when we gear up for a fire, I sit facing backward, so I can put on my airpack

Truck 11  This thing has so much cool stuff.  Has more tools than most of us prolly do :gap:

Heavy Rescue.  This has everything our tech team needs to preform high and low angle rope rescue, confined space rescue, trench rescue, building shoring, etc.

We don't have Lts. out here.  We run 2 FFs, an operator, and a captain on each rig (engine and truck, brush rigs are manned as needed)  Truck captain is the station boss at two company stations.  I'm hopefully going to be working on my EMT-I next year or so, and 'd like to get on the WET and Tech Rescue teams.

not realy.  Pretty run of the mill calls so far.  I've head one fire, a vehicle fire in a junkyard.  Got to put that out all by myself, which was really cool.  It was cooking pretty good too.  Other than that, nothing real major. Sick people, car accidents, etc. We had two accidents that were crazy in their results though.

1) The roads were real slick, and this guy was coming up an onramp, and slid on black ice, and flipped.  The vehicle (s10 blazer) wound up on its lid off the side of the road.  It landed in about two feet of snow, driver crawled out the pass. side window, and the rig was fine!  No broken glass, no body damage, hell, the roll didn't even rip the mirrors off.

2)  During our last big snow storm, 2 women in a ranger got hit by another truck on the freeway.  At the point where she was hit, the free way was raised on an embankment about 25 feet above the surrounding area.  She wound up going under the barrier fence, and rolling off the embankment.  She landed on her wheels, in a parking lot.  they took her to the hospital with her complaining of a headache  :o  If she had landed on her lid, or even on her side, we would have had a body recovery.   :conf:
