I wanted it up high to have a good departure angle  I was out wheeling & this guy in a jeep just about ripped his tire carrier off  I didn't want that to happen to me

The holes where the pin goes through are going to oblong out and it will get real sloppy. Need to find another way to fasten it closed.

I changed it right before MCR6 but didn't up date this thread. Now it has a 5/8" nut welded to the top of the bottom tube & a 5/8" bolt secures it. This was just a temp thing that I did. I will be building a new one soon.

sweet   but u are right about the departure angle. 

I have the flat bed and I thinking about mounting mine to the rear of the flat bed using a Izusu tire carrier and bolting it vertical (like urs) so that it will hang at an angle over the rear of the bed and not protude out the end of the bed (like urs).....just because of the departure angle.  I have scrapped my reciever many times already and it is bobbed

This is the almost finished carrier. I used a trailer hitch pin to lock the swing out right now cause the welder ran out of wire. I'm going to use freeze plugs to cap off the open ends of the pipe. I used wire ties to attach the license plate cause again I ran out of wire. I'm also going to mount a license plate light, back up lights & wire them to the trailer plug.

Not sure if your done, but  you may think about building a block or spacer to weld onto the bumper between it and the swinging tire carier where the pin goes through... Im just thinking with the weight on it and the bouncing around caused by offroading will cause un-needed stress on the carier/hing....  I dont know if that makes sence or not.

The bolt is 7/8" & has held up good, but the 5/8" bolt that I have that locks it in place is  questionable but it worked going into & out of the Rubicon through Cadillac hill. I'm not going to do anything else to it now. I'm going to build one off my rear bumper soon.

Great Idea, I had all the materials to fab up a bumper mounted spare (with idea's from DTB and 79coyote) until I lucked into a oem swing out spare for my 85 4Runner, complete with bracketry for the latch (inside rear quarters and tailgate).
However I'm not sure it will hold up to the weight of a 35" Truxus on 10"rim. Good Idea about approach angles, I'll take that into consideration.

Thats a neat idea, i have seen it done a few times, but if you get stuff in and out of your rig often then I would shy away, seems it might get old lifting it up and down..... Although you could retro fit a hydro lifter.... Now that would be cool

I had one on my K5 Blazer & it got old quick lifting a 33" tire mounted to a steel rim

LOL I could see that,  when I was building a carrier for my jeep a buddy wanted me to do something like that for my carrier he thought it would be great, Im running 42s with steel beadlock H1 wheels....  Im real glad I didnt go for it...

if you build it to swing outwards it wouldn't be bad at all.  just getting it on ad off would suck.

I dont see it being any easier to get it on and off with a down swing, acually it looks like you would have to take the tire on and off in the upright position...  The only way that swing down would be easier is if it was reverse mounted so the tire was on top of the carrier when folded down then you can just roll it off and back on...
