With the engine running and the front axle off the ground, is it normal to be able to push the tyres from the side and make the ram move in and out about 1/2 an inch or should the ram be solid with the pressure from the pump holding in position?

If you had a steering stablizer it would restrict the flow of fluid allowing it to move slowly not keep it from moving completely. Same concept here only this stablizer (ram) gets pressure when you turn the wheel one way or the other.I would think the valve in the box i out of adjustment causing it to have pressure to one side. This would cause it to fight you trying to turn to one side.
could the box be improperly tapped mark?
