Getting ready to install TRD locker in front??
« on: Jul 31, 2007, 07:53:53 PM »
I just had my TRD 3rd set up with new gears and bearings, and am getting ready to install it in the front end of my SAS'd 4runner.

Looking at how to run it.....do I use Inchworms wire kit, Downey cable kit, Toyota wiring with ECU??

I want it to be as reliable as possible. Who has one in their front end and how do you have it set up? How long did the install take with housing mods??

I'm running elockers Front and Rear.  I'm sure you can do the housing mods and wiring in a weekend.  Just be sure to take your time on drilling/tapping the new holes cause if you're not careful, the studs will not line up on the 3rd.  Lucky for me, I only had to hog out one hole on the 3rd member.

I used Carterman's wiring diagram with relays and 2 stock power antenna switches mounted in the factory dash opening.  Almost 2 years now and so far no problems to date.  There are numerous wiring diagrams out there, but I find Carterman's to be simple and best of all, it works with no gremlins.  Just flip the switch so the green locked light lights up and I'm locked.  I find that I don't need the front at all, just on harder obstacles where I can't crawl up with the rear locked.

If you need more info, feel free to PM or email me.

Did you have any clearance issues with the e-locker motor and passenger side springs? Did you add welds to the diff housing before you drilled?

No clearance issues if you file aluminum motor housing a bit.  I found a 9/16 U bolt was harder to fit on the inside so I used a 1/2 U bolt and double nutted it.  I guess you can get away with not welding to increase the surface of the housing mating surface, but since I had my front axle all apart, I welded mine and filed it flat.  I wanted to do it right the first time and not have to redo it.

Sweet runner. I actually have pics of your front e-locker on file...not sure where I got them. Thanks for the insight. I will e-mail you if I have questions.

I do not know from personal experience, but Ive heard that the Downey cable lock does not work in the front. I'd just wire it up and call it good.

Sound like to me you will have to get out  to engage and disengage it.

I measured the stock bolts on my elocker with my calipers and ordered these flat heads from McMaster based on the length (16mm) of the threads on the stock bolt.

M8x1.25
mcmaster part number 91294A282
http://www.mcmaster.com/
It's $8.24 for a box of 25 so you only need one box.

or if you have a screw shop nearby, it's an M8x1.25 thread with an overall length of 16mm

weve been having trouble getting the u bolt to go in teh clearence is so tight the 1/2 in wont even fit through, and everything else is already installed so we missed out on the countersunk screws. We ground down the threads on 2 sides and used a die to rethread it and were gonna try that, any other suggestions
