Yeah the turbo setup was a pretty fun idea. I used some sch 40 plumbers elbows (drop forged 304ss) and welded them all together with an off the shelf merge collector... Then mounted a 14b (1st gen eclipse) turbo to it.

All stainless steel piping, and a megasquirt standalone and we were in business. I probably should have done it to a motor the DIDNT have 200k on it.

Lots of rod knock and a whole bunch of 7000 rpm power pulls in the mud pits, and it was all over.

you massaging the firewall on your new rig to stuff the tire or.. ?

That one you can kinda see in the first few pics. I had a friend help me, and we rolled back the fenders and cut the firewall. The patch was made with seam sealer and aluminum diamond plate (pop riveted). I did it like that because in WI we have to alway be battling rust from the salt on the roads.

I will see if I can find some pics.

The first pic is of the firewall after A LOT of hammer time, but before it was patched, sealed, and prettied up...

The second is off my ecu wiring harness that my friend cut in half on accident. :smack:

You should do a more detailed right up on that turbo stuff. Your set up was a bit extreme, but there are a number of people into turbos and trying to get more out of their yotas.

I would be willing to put together some sort of FAQ or whatever if I knew what was holding people up. Tuning, Hard parts, theory, ect....

I will say this much: When that 4runner wanted to throw some mud, IT DID IT! :D

I was thinking more along the lines of hard parts and tuning.

yea that's all in good fun, but you need a motor that can handle a turbo.. you throw a turbo on a stock motor and you get a piston through the block.

Sorry to disagree but I do. The short blocks of the 22re will handle nearly 500 hp before the pop on a WELL PUT TOGETHER setup. The cast pistons are always the first to go, then the rods. At that point though, you are nearing 600-700hp.

People argued me on this stuff back in the day and told me I was wrong. I dont get that so much ever since I started putting 900+ hp down on a 2.3L 4banger.

Most people are lacking on the idea of getting the air metered properly. Even if you go and give the ecu a bigger injector and some how correct for the extra air flow... Most people forget about the extreme amount of timing the ecu will try and send once it sees that much air mass.

The stock AFM sucks on the pickups and 4runners. You can damn near peg that thing open with the NA motor, let alone a turbo'ed one. The biggest gain I made on the Yoda was the use of a MAP sensored stane alone. This and a carb distributor did the trick. At that point the 24psi of boost I mentioned earlier was all done on a bone stock engine.

In the process though, the 200K motor I was using and the extreme rpm I was pulling, pushed it over the edge.

are those stock axle shafts?

   :outtahere:

Shamb- Yeah there stock. For now at least. The plan is to build more power, break whatever is weakest, then replace it with cooler stuff.

I am not too worried about it just yet because the thing has no torque really. I have been kicking around a few ideas thought, and wouldnt mind everyones input...

I have 3 ideas in mind for getting the extra power I need: Supra engine, SBC w/ TPI fuel injection and a th350 (have the parts), or lots of gear.

I really need that "off idle" power to make me happy in this thing.

Thanks for the input!

PM me about the turbo stuff.

Gittinit

Before you jump into a motor swap you really shoul consider the strength of your birfs. With the muddy terrain you fancy the 27 spline longs and stock inners might just last a little while.
Problem is with a motor swap even some 30 spline longs wont keep you happy when the tires find something solid to dig into, or when you hit some cross ruts real hard. I want to know how well this setup works , becouse I have contimplated getting larger tires. keep  posting up with action pics, those are great.
Did I miss the specs on your rig somewhere?
Hug your kids, pray for a soldier, and don't sweat the small stuff.

TopStreet

Thanks Gettinit!

I have been keeping the 30spline / Long's combo in the back of my head as "a good thing to have" regardless of if I am breaking or not. I have a theory with axle strength, gear ratio, and tire size (as they relate together) that I formed when I had my 4Runner. I have still got a few pieces of the puzzle to figure out yet, but so far it has prooven true.

I can get into more detail, but I seem to get some "resistance" from people I tell. I think it is because it goes against the way most people think about it.

ANYWAYS..... I am not looking for crazy power, but more that off idle gain. I believe the 7mge (non turbo) Supra motor is the way to go. Not 100% decided but I am looking for donor cars already. :yesnod:

The reason behind this is that I have a large backround of building the supras.

They allow me to easily keep a stickshift.

The higher compression in the non turbo really gives it a lot down low, without the insanity the turbos have up high.

Weight is on my side. (not as much as the 22re, but better then 350 Chevy).

AND... Its All YODA! :bananaguitar:

The only thing I have yet to decide on is the use of a dry timing belt. With how much mud and how many water crossings I go after, I dont want to risk a stupid failure.

Thanks again for the good input. :welcome:

How goes it bro? Great build. I really would like to hear your theorys, it seems you know your stuff. I think anything off the beaten trail is great, especially if it works. So what if a few people don't want to hear a new idea.

The supra motor is great, I6 engines have wonderful torque. But you should look into the tacoma 3.4. That is one badass motor with plenty of power, not too much weight, and fuel injection. :twocents:

Peace.

Big Pap Dog

 VERY GOOD!!  I am really enjoying this build!  The fundamentals of the suspension you built to this beast  are what make it so cool(stuffing 37's and now 42's no problem, haha).  It looks to me as if this "mild" tire change hasn't slowed down your style of wheeling and that makes it interesting...break it..make it better, hell yeah!  Oh and i second the motion for a 5vz-e...and supercharge it

Shamb

only one thing you need to know about aftermarket axle shafts for a Toyota.
