Manhattan parking spot going for $225,000

The story goes on to say that the parking space is more the the median existing home price in the US. I don't know about y'all...but, I missed the gravy train!

From the article,

QuoteRealtors put the nation's median existing home price at $223,700 in May, meaning that half of the homes sold in the month sold for less than that and half sold for more.

What? What do they mean by a "median"? Is this the average price of all houses sold in May, or is it truly the average of every home purchased in May? It doesn't make sense to me when they say "that half of the homes sold in the month sold for less than that and half sold for more." That would mean to have an equal 50/50 number of homes selling above and below that price, but if you have 1 house that cost like 1 million dollars, then it would take 4 houses from this average price to bring the average back down......

dang, why the heck do I even care about this GOSH

Median is not  the average...it's the middle, it's an unusual distinction.

Yeah I figured it was really the middle, since they stated such, but I don't think I would have chose to use that figure. I'm sure there was some motivating reason as to why they did; it probably looks better or something..
