Does anyone know if a gearset from a factory open carrier can be used on a full carrier replacement locker (Detroit) and still mesh properly? I know that used gears from a stock carrier to another stock carrier is OK, but I'm not sure here...Seems I heard somewhere it wouldn't work.

it needs to be re set up but should work fine

I know it has to be setup again, but I recall hearing something about a detroit had a different offset to the flange or some BS and it wouldn't work. :dunno:

I concur with Drew. One needs to measure the backlash before removing the old gears. Then reset the same backlash when setting up with the detroit. This of course is assuming the gears were set up right from the get go.

In regards to offset. You need to make sure that your Detroit is offset for the gear Ratio you are using. There are different part numbers for Detroits depending on the gear ratio.

X2.  Since you won't be removing the pinion the only thing you have to do is set bearing preload and the backlash where they were before you took it apart.

Offset would be an issue, except,  :headscratch: I believe toyota didn't have a cutoff point for ratio change for most of their gear sets. I've built toy 4.88 and 5.29's using the 4.10 case with no problems or thick gear sets. Other axle makes however seem to be more likely to require a case change in these range of ratios. I don't see why you should have any issues with going to a detroit.  :dunno: unless of course I'm wrong. Check part numbers to verify, I would.

same carrier  on toys,   Duffil,  all you  need  to do is  swap the ring  from your carrier to the  detroit  then   adjust backlash,
