axles? HELP!!!!
« on: Jun 28, 2007, 02:35:12 PM »
OK so i just got a 94 pickup and I'm going SAS. would the axles out of an 80's Chevy be a good choice or should i look around some more....the axles are free. i plan to run 36 or 37 inch iroks so what else would be best for that with the stock 22re motor....like what gears and lockers and should i attempt coilovers or just go with leafs(from the same truck)????? anyhelpful ideas greatly appreciated!

You didn't specify what axles they are. If the are 10 bolts I wouldn't use them. Go with Toy axles. I have 36" Iroks with 5.29s spool in the rear and detroit in a hi pinion front. I'd stick with leafs personally. You could do RUF with Chevy/Ford leafs in the rear.

You would be better off with a Toyota front end. It will be stronger than the Dana 44 ( which is usually in front of the Chevy's). It is cheaper to install a high steer kit. Install Longfield axles in front, they are stronger than Dana 44 axles. I would go with springs.

I'd go check'm out first.  If it were free, I'd throw a 44 under there :yesnod:  :dunno:  see what they are

Just FYI. That 14 bolt Is not the venerable full floater. That is the 9 1/2" RG which is a semi floater that also came in 6 and 8 lug configs for 1/2 and 3/4 ton. The 10 1/2" RG Is the full floater 14 bolt which is the beefier unit. Although, It will work. At least you won't have to buy new wheels and tires.  :gap:

Just a little FYI I have built Dana 60's 44's and corprate 14's. For both Toyota's and Jeeps. If your going to use  one cause it is free, you will definitely surpass your free cost in parts for building these axles. The Dana 44 will be as close to the same price as a Toyota but it will not be as strong. Just something to think about :qtip:

Hell I would love to get my hands on that 6 lug 14bolt, get rid of that crappy 10bolt in my Burban

But for your build, I would get a Yota axle for sure  :beerchug:

This is true, if you plan on building them :disturbed:

:hammerhead: of course, this is from the guy who still crawls with IFS.

dont worry blackdog, your not the only one crawling with IFS now.

with the gm axles that you found if their from the same truck then its a 10 bolt front (basicly the same as a dana 44) and a 14 bolt semi-floater rear. even though that semi floater is not as strong as the full floater i HIGHLY DOUBT that with 36" tires you would ever damage that axle. the 10 bolt (with v8 power) is good for up to 33" tires reliably and locked. less power and 36" tires locked, i'd carry spare hubs and shafts.
