Carnage - Bent Front Cryo Output & Drive Flange
« on: Jun 28, 2007, 07:52:45 AM »
Well on my last trip to the rocks, I ended up breaking a U-joint on my Front Square Driveline, Bent the Splined Section of my Rear Schedule 40 Driveline. :smack: I also found that both the front ouput drive flange and the front pinoin flange was loose, yet the pinion nut was still tight and both were leak free...  :shake_head: Thought that was a bit odd and I just tightened them up and hopped for the best.  After replaceing the rear driveline with a new one, I took the truck for a test drive and I had some major vibs only in 4wd.  Well thats when I found that:

The cryo front output appears to be bent atleast 0.075" . :shakehead:
See video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LNwJChxxaPA

And I also discovered that I bent the front output triple drilled drive flange atleast 0.085" . :shake:
See video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B9YjhgXFZrY

Obviously I must of landed on something really hard to do that!  :hammer: Anybody else see stuff like this happen to the front t-case output? I've got spares - so I'm just going to reinstall those and get back to wheeling.  :driving:

Oh and I also cracked the T-case housing around one of the dowel pins...

What did you hit that transfered to your transfercase?
It's fully protected right?

No Racing involved.... Just rock crawling.

I'm assuming I must have hit the front driveline, which transfered the load to the front output. I did break a U-joint on the diff end of the front driveline, but I don't see causing the carnage at the T-case. Heres an old picture of the Flatbelly - so yes, its well protected! BTW that temporary exhaust flex hose is now replaced!

Thats the coolest break of a ujoint I think I have ever seen! There are marks on the youlk like as though the ujoint was binding, whats up wit dat?

Mabye those marks on the yolk were made when the joint let go????

I found my front spring clamps opened up and let the front axle crawl out from under the front on a gnarly climb, thus the yoke bound up and broke the u-joint. No surprise.... but yes, the break on the u-joint does look impressive. I need to weld a strap across the top of the clamps so that won't happened again.

I was just curious if you guys had seen the bent front output shaft and drive flange carnage before. I hadn't...

Only twice, but both were front end accidents.

I think the binding u joint explains the bent driveshaft flange, I have however never seen or heard of a bent output, broken outputs yes but not bent.

Ah, no its doesn't explain it, because the U-joint that broken was on the diff end.... This drive flange was on the T-case...

The diff drive flange is still nice and straight- I check it with a Dia indicator.

Could have been a $180 slip joint added to the bill too if it was a conventional driveline.
