OK, anyone who looked in teh tow rig section saw my new soon to be tow rig.  I wanna know bout 460's.  I know small blocks can gain some hp and MPG from intake manifold swaps, etc.  I know good mileage will never happen with this much engine and weight, but can it be improved from bad to mediocre?

Who knows what...tell me!  :turtle3:

the 460 is the baddest big block of them all

all the power adders of small blocks can apply....

big blocks are what most drag cars run.... lots of performance stuff available for them

the 460 is venerable and strong and parts are readily available

I don't know what is currently on it, I am assuming it is stock.
I was thinking cleaning up the carb and maybe an Edelbrok (sp?) performer intake.  DOn't want to spend a fortune, just want it to run as well as it can.

My girlfriends dad has a 97 F250 with a 460 in it and that thing tows their toy hauler loaded down with quads, gear and tools no problem.  I would not expect much better MPG out of it though.  If you want better MPG get a diesel.

This I understand...MPG is gonna be rough, but I want to get it as good as I can get.  Besides, if the gas mileage is gonna suck, I might as well get all the ponies I can for my suckage.

instead of mpg you will have to measure it in gpm ;)

the water pump is a horrible job :shakehead:

Yeah it sucked, but not near as bad as doing it on a honda, or smaller vehicle.  Had to take the power steering bracket and the front of the engine off... but it wasn't as bad as it could have been

Nevermind on the diesel suggestion, I just saw the rig so it's not exactly like you are just buying a truck.  That thing is one of a kind and for a great price.  I would just get all new plugs, filters, fluids, full exhaust including headers, cats and cat back and intake.  Perhaps run some sea foam through the tank.  That's about all you can do for better mileage.

Edit: I didn't even think of this, it will be nearly impossbile to do headers and exhaust and intake on a totally custom rig like this unless you wan tto fab some stuff up.

took about 6 hours but dude that motor is tough

It has a "custom" exhaust on it, I am 99% sure they are cherry bombs so they will prob get swapped for something quieter, we will see.
Headers I will not deal with right now, but I may swap intakes and get a nice filter.
Sea Foam is also on the menu.
What NEEDS help the most is the interior.  Gonna take some time to get it cleaned up.

as far as the interior, it looks like standard old ford conversion van rv stuff, should be easy and not too expensive to setup

jcwhitney, theyve got tools, exhuast, seats, interior things, all of that....

what about chipping it? I know they are readily available for Fords, you can have every option from fuel economy to HP and torque.
I used to work for Superchips.
and you're going to be caravaning with the Mammoths to MRC6 and it won't be fast driving.

12 mpg is not bad for something like that.

Oh, and what about that fifth wheel. Are you going to use that? That adds a lot of weight.
