whats this 4runner worth?

I have a picture of the damage on my cellphone, but I cant get it off of it right now.
My girlfriends friend wrecked her 4runner and she wants to sell it.  She says she wants to get no less than $1000 for it, and I think thats a little too much.  I want to buy it and build it instead of my 82.  Its a red (mostly faded) 86 4runner, not the sr5.  The drivers front suspension is destroyed, and probably the front axle.  Most likely, most or all of the IFS is either broken or way out of whack.  The front left fender is smashed.  The front of the body of the truck around the engine bay is tweaked, you can see where the seams split, and the hood is not level when it closes.  Its got about 260K on it, and it runs but not very good.  Sometimes it wont start and other times itll run weird.  Real bad gas mileage too.  Passes smog.  And the drivers door has a huge dent.  Transmission has seen better days...getting time real soon for a new one.
The truck is 100% stock.  Newish 31"s, but the front drivers rim/tire are dead.

WHAT DO YOU THINK ITS WORTH!?!?

I want to pay about 700-800 for it.  What do you guys think?

I couldnt find any cracked welds on the frame, and the frame is not tweaked.  the frame suffered no damage.

I bought an 88,V6, SR5 that had the same damage on the passenger side for $500 & it ran excellent. Your in the ball park $700-$800 but not $1000

she WANTS 1500 for it, but she says she wont take anything lower than 1000. she doesnt really know what shes talking about.  it runs like crap and smokes. needs a lot of TLC

I say she's smokin crack.  She's lucky to get rid of it and should take what she can get.  If you get it for a reasonable price ($500)  I would definatly do a SAS.  It sounds like she really doesn't know how to take care of her vehicle, let alone, know what it is worth.  just my   

I've seen runners at the wrecking yard with salvage titles in better shape than that going for $800 that look perfectly drivable.

I KNOW thats what im saying.  she thinks shes going to get it fixed...............ya right.  thousands of dollars.
its really totalled.  if you guys saw it in person, you would laugh. 
ive talked to a few of her friends and they all say she keeps saying she wants to get 1500 for it.

you guys need to tell her this.  Ive had my eye on this truck for about a year now.  she used to say the transmission was going out and i told her i was going to buy it when it went out.  now its totalled, and its got my name written all over it.  i wanted a 4runner crawler in the first place, not a pickup.

I paid $175 for the 4Runner in my avtar, bone stock & it was missing the cylinder head. Tell her your going to use it for parts to upgrade your 82 cause the frame is bent & isn't worth fixing. Get it cheap with the title & SAS that thing

DUDE SHE IS NOT MY GIRLFRIEND.  its my friends girlfriend.  if this girl was MY girlfriend, i think i would either kill myself, or her.  I dont really like her that much.
OK since that is settled....

shes taking it to a place to see what the cost of the repair will be. she thinks shes gonna spend a few thousand to get it repaired and then be able sell it for a LOT of money like 4000 atleast.  I dont even know what she is thinking and she wont listen to me when i try and tell her its not worth half of that with a salvaged title after its fixed, and it wasnt even worth that much in the first place before the wreck!
I really want it though, since she wrecked it I have been making big plans for it up in my head.  Im hoping to get it for 600-700.  Shes not gonna go down much from 1000 because shes just like that.

No offence to the ladies of  , but a lot of women are in the dark about this maintenance thing and otherwise automobile stuff in general. looking at the damage im saying $300-400 at the most, especially since it sounds like the tranny/engine are going to need major overhaul and who knows what else will surface with a vehicle that's had no TLC given to it. If she had wanted to get money out of it she shouldnt have wrecked it.

im with these guys maybe 4 to 500 at the most....its pretty much a parts truck now..there could be other (not visible now) issues that could pop up later too..like say hairline cracks in the frame or whatnot

I bought a cherry 87 4runner with 200K that ran PERFECT(better than any other I've ever seen or heard run).  Perfect tranny, everything stock, clean and nice.  I paid $1,200.

Tell her to quit trying to be so damn greedy.  That price is a joke.  $500 MAX.

X2 The right one will come around. I think the problem is you want it badly & she knows that. Tell her you will give her $600 & for every week she doesn't sell it your price will go down by $25.

She's not going to listen to you, so she's going to have to figure out what it's worth the hard way.  It's got 260k, smokes and runs crappy?  You're basically buying a frame and part of a body, $300.  To build it, you'd need the front sheet metal (if you want it). Rebuild motor if it's rebuildable.  New/rebuilt tranny.  Solid axle swap, but I'd bet the power steering got jacked up in the accident, so there goes one of the big benefits of sas'n an ifs rig.  I'd be very suspicious of the frame, even though it looks straight.  Say you buy this thing, you still have to dump, at least $2500 into it to get it on the road and in descent shape.  Do you have that time & money ready?  I'd just hate to see you get taken on a wrecked truck that could be a lawn ornament if you're not careful.

Sounds like you need to shop around and find some other wrecked junk, and threaten to buy it.  Who knows, you might find a better deal, like some others have posted.
