NEED HELP IMMEDIATELY!!!! (now with video of the problem)
« on: May 25, 2007, 07:13:12 PM »

My truck is acting up bad. Perfect timing also, gone all day Saturday, Wheeling on Sunday. Gotta fix it tonight.

Symptoms:
Had a dead battery that would not hold a charge.
Bought a new battery, starts ok, not great, but ok.

When easing up the throttle I hit 4000rpms just fine, going real easy and gradual on the pedal.
When flooring it, it cuts out and just sits and sputter at 1000rpms kinda like it is getting spark on 1 of every 4

WTF is the problem!!!!???

HELP!

Wife says it's the alternator...any other opinions?

I'll be back online around 8:30pm to answer any questions, or something I have not covered.

Check under the dist cap see any mosture or carbon tracks. Is there a botton in the middle of the cap?

Wot Glen said. Pickup or worn dist. Some body made plug wires out of vacuum lines?

Hope you figure it out.

when my ignitor died, it did it with no warning......

my friends truck did the sputter thing awhiel ago when his maf had some frayed wires in the harness

not sure about the battery issues, otehr than possibly bad grounds or a short

not holding a charge usually means the battery was charged discharged so much that it finally threw in the towel.... how is your charging system?

just for shits and grins, jumper your diagnostic plug.  See if it throws a code.  Trouble cranking...how are your grounds?

also, put a meter across your battery with it running, and check the voltage.  don't throw parts at it.

take a paper clip.  there is a two prong round plug at the drivers side towards the front.  stick the clip in, shorting the terminals and trun the key on.  count flashes.  the only way to test the alt is to put a meter on it.  or use a testlight(this is done by having one person hold the light on the battery, and another start your POS.  The light will dim and should then get brighter than it was with the truck off)crude, but it works. why do you not have a meter? :slap:

edit: you can do the reverse of my testlight idea, have it running, put the light on it, then kill the truck, light should dim.

it could be out of adjustment...or it could have gone poo on you.  If you don't get this figured out tonight, I will have my TPS test plug and a meter on hand sunday.

Found another ground wire going from below the alternator to the pass side fender, from the engine mount to the pass fender.

OK, sounds like that is in order.  could be the low battery voltage got your starter hot and it's now dragging.  I would say, since it's code 7 your problem is your TPS...but you need to find out if it's charging.

any idea where your timing is? and if the dist bolt is tight?

yeah...I did some work on CrazyYota's truck...he threw about 10 codes, then the o2 wire fell apart.  I soldered a new connector on and then it only threw a couple.

Yeah, Rex, if you could bring your TPS crap if this doesn't work that would be great.

do you have anyway of checking your timing, and did you check to see the dissy hadn't rotated/bolt was tight?  Starter sounds fine...good speed.  real low idle, hard starting, code7...95% its yer tps.  they are a finicky little b*std.  sometimes the bolts can loosen up and it'll shift a little...
