L43/T-case top shift...87 top shift T-case
« on: May 05, 2007, 09:34:39 PM »
would my L43 transfer case (top shift short style) work with a 87 top shift transfer case (tall style) in a dual set up? The reason I ask because it seems their is a tall transfer case(87) and my L43 transfer case...somthing about seamless case (L43) that marlin has in the T-case section.

L43 is a transmission.  As far as I know the two case that can't be joined is a manual case to an auto case.  The manual tcase like what you have has a 21 spline output.  The 23 spine output tcases were offered behind turbo engines.  The tcase you have should have the non-necked down input shaft.  It is stronger but will need a bit of grind work to get to mat with a reduction box.

Grinding the out put shaft is what you mean? Yeah, I know L43 is a tranny. Just that I wanted to make it clear that my t-case is behind the L43.
I'm going to pick up a complete 1987 T-case for $80. I just wanted to make sure it will work behind my T-case.
Thanks....I wouldn't mind what anyone else has to say.

You would be better off splitting the case out of the 87 to make the reduction box from.  It will have the necked down input which is weaker.  Use the tcase from your rig with the bigger input behind it.  The rear case will receive more touque and needs all the strength it can get.

You will have to grind the input shaft on the t-case to make it clear (slide) into the reduction box.

Wasn't trying to bash ya.  It just sounded like you refered to the tcase as an L43.

actually  NO

if  you are running a L series  tranny  in your rig now  you should keep the short  case   as your  crawler  and put the entire 87 case  in the rear

this way  you have the larger 10mm  bolt flanges  front and rear

the difference  in the  top and short will be covered  up when you install the MC07  on it

Installed 1979 - 1980
Top Shift
Short Style Case
Short Low Range Shift Rod
8 or 9 mm Flange Bolts
Noisey Style Gears
21 Spline "Fuseless" L43-Style Input
27 Spline Outputs

the  differenc e  in these  is about 1 inch,  but  its  not  important if  using them in a dual case because  the adapter   , well it  adapts  them  :cheese:

Good point.  I didn't think about the flanges.

Thanks. They guy seemed to have backed out of saling his topshift for $80. with shifter if he ca find it. or $50 no shifter.
Which is my next question. with no shifter would I be able to buy a aftermarket shifter for it being placed behind my T-case that I have now...Like stated above. Twin stick would be mounted in the rear t-case current?
OR what shifter can take it's place besides 1987?
Yes they maybe be noob q's. I just want to make sure if I did get it. Getting another shifter wouldn't be to hard to find or buy.
Thanks again.
Mike
BTW here are a few pics of last months run at SPORP, TX
