The best tip I can give ya for a stock rig is, only take a couple shot's at an obsticale before you get strapped if there is a line of people behind you. I absolutely hate sitting behind some one that is not properly equipped for 2 hours while they try to make some line. If there is a line of people behind you, give up and get strapped up the obstacle.

stay calm....there is nothing like the feeling you get when there is a group of people standing around (stock rigs are usually more fun to watch for me) yelling "get it! get it! floor it! get-r-dun!!" sure it gets your adrenaline pumping and is fun but thats when stuff starts breaking or you get into a nice predicament (im known for these lol)  so yea...slow...calm.....air tires down....if you are not sure about your line back up and re-evaluate or ask someone to spot. There is nothing wrong with asking for a spotter (unless they are clueless). Some say it damages pride but at least it wont damage your truck. :twocents:

depends on the tire and wheel combo...different tires and different width wheels hold beads better.....personally i wont go below 10 (usually run 11 or 12 psi) without an air source or spare

I run 8 to 10psi in most situations on the trail. Down to 3 to5psi in snow. I am running 33's & aluminum 8" rims. The only trouble I had was the tires spinning on the rims at real low psi when they get wet. The last tires are glued to the rims with the snot they use at the tires shop. Helped stop the tires from slipping on the rims. Experiment with different tire pressures before you go. Every rim/tire combo is different.

I think your best bet would be to tag along with a like equipped rig. Follow them step for step and get the feel for how the truck handles in different situarions. Definately take it slow and don't ever get over cofident like me......"Ok what did I break this time". Be the guy with the toolls and the willingness to help fix others junk and you will be rewarded with all the help and insight you need. When approaching an obsticle others will tell you go this way or that. You should pick one to listen too and stay with that unless it dosen't work for you, then 1 take a strap, or 2 listen to someone else, but be careful becouse it is easy to get overwhelmed when a dozen people try to tell ya which way to go.
Hug your kids, pray for a soldier, and don't sweat the small stuff.

I would think you almost need T-case gears to rock crawl. Without gearing you'r gonna be slippin the clutch and spinnin' the tires, rather than the slow and steady approach you need.
Am I right or no?
I am new to crawling rocks, not mudding and general wheeling, but rocks.
Hell, I could use a few pointers myself, I built a rock crawler and I want to use it for that.

10??  That street pressure!!!! :cheese:    It does depend on tires and rims like DTB said. I run 39 in Irok's on an 8 inch reversed wheel at 1-2 pis in rear and 2-3 in front.  Never lost a bead, though now that I've said that I will :smack:

Watch the more experience drivers and do what they do, learn from your mistakes, and dont be afraid to get strapped, I run between 5-8 psi on the trail but in the snow sometimes down to 2-3 lbs i was running 33's on 15x8's never blew a bead due to tire pressure, but have becuase of being pulled sideways.

Know your truck's limits. You have a near stock rig, and it is IFS.  Arguements on which is better aside, IFS  flexes differently than a SA, and you have to take that into account.  You can't just follow the rig in front of you (even though thats a good start) you have to think about what you're doing.  Listen to your spotter, they can see things you can't.  Start playing with your air pressure now, you'll figure out what you like the best

Carry a strap, be willing to help, don't hold up the trail, and you'll be good.  :yesnod:

If you are running 33's or smaller don't go below 15 psi, anything above that and then go to 10psi. You have to consider clearance too. Now if you are new to rockcrawling the best thing to do is find one person in your group that you can tell knows what he's doing. Have him spot you through so that you get a feel for traversing through a rockgarden, he will know your vehicle better than you do and where not to send you and get you stuck. Discuss with him before hand and when it comes time for a spotter make sure everyone else knows that he's your spotter. Watch him and only him, trust him, and if someone else gets involved your spotter should ask him/her to stop giving input. I have a handful of friends that I completely trust in this matter and when they tell me to turn I listen. Sure everyone misjudges on a line, but if you have a compitint spotter you can usually back out of that point and try another line. The most important part about using a spotter is paying complete attention to him and following his direction.

DTB

yea forgot about that too RS, decreasing air pressure will decrease your clearance too....could be an inch of more lower with 33s

Also to your credit it is a lwb and will be more stable but will run out of clearance quicker, if you seriously want to do the 'con make sure to have at least a rear locker. The 'con is hard but you have many options and don't have to do all the nutzy stuff everyone shows. There are lots of alternate routes to avoid most of the severe challenge spots but there are a couple handfuls of obstacles that have to be tackled. As long as you don't mind smoking the clutch here & there and locking the rear you'll do fine.

twistedtoy92

yeah, if you still have IFS and no locker and im guessing the 1600 ceramic clutch? i run that and i have 30 inch BFG M/Ts on 8 inch steelies and 11-12 psi is as low as i'd take it with that set up.... your clutch foot is gonna be tired at the end of the day!!! just be smart and have fun!!! and gather up parts for a SAS!!!!!

Don't forget to take pictures.  Trust me, when the heat is on and you're in the middle of the best part of the trail - it's VERY likely that this very spot will be the only place you didn't take any pictures!  Don't let that happen.  I always regret it, but am too busy puckered to stop in the middle of a heart pounding experience.

Keep this in mind on side slopes(for rolling over).  If you start feeling tippy to the side while you're on a hill, turn the wheel toward the DOWNHILL area.  Just turn the wheel downhill, and gas.  This works in forward and reverse.  It may feel like a crazy thing to do, but it works.  Saved me twice(at least it felt like I would have rolled).
