jeep or toyota?
« on: Apr 22, 2007, 08:04:06 PM »
okay im 17 years old and finally looking for a 4wd i want either a 85 or older yota or a jeep Cherokee. i want the cherokee for the extra room and able to carry more then 3 and i could put subs in it. i was told it would be cheeper to lift a yota. what would you guys recomend for the wheeling abilty and cost of lifting. what would be my best bet? thanks.

Toyota all the way, they are just built better. Have a look under a yota and compare it to say a wrangler. I saw the front axle on a wrangler is the diameter of my side shaft.

As a person who's owned and wheeled both for a few years,I say go Toyota.A Toyota is much more reliable and the Jeep has weaker components.Jeep is still a good rig but for a first 4x4 that you plan on Off-Roading,I would pick an 80-85 Toyota. Here's a picture of my old rig and my new project.

i was thinking about doing the SAS to a newer one but.. how much work is it really? is it worth the like 300+ i would have to spend on it, for the axle and sas kit and high steer kit?

well it alllllllllllllll depends on if you like the newer body styles or the older and if you know how to torch/weld/set up suspension and are mechanically inclined!!! i personnally like my 92 since its already got the wider rear end and fuel injection plus when i get my 85 axle under it it'll look badass!!! or if you still want fuel injection and a straight axle, find an 85 runner!! last year of SA and first year 22re (fuel injected) and for your info, it is most DEFINATELY worth the work to SAS any toyota!!!! straight axles are the only way to go if you like to rock crawl and all the other off camber terrain!!! that's a little of my opinion!!!

100% go with the Toyota.

I catch alot of flack from my coworkers because I have put the amount of money I have into my truck. Got even more since on of the guys bought a lifted CJ-5 a few weeks ago already finished for less than I have invested right now and I am not near finished.

Biggest "problem" with Toyota's is the lack of power but I can more than live with that. allot of people down here are telling me I am nuts to have put another 22r into mine rather than putting a 350 in it because down here all there is is mud, and brute force helps out allot with that. But I feel sure, when the truck is done I am sure it will more than hold its own in anything but the deepest mud out around here, if I ever decide to put it in the mud at all that is.
There is a fine line between clever and stupid, I just wish I knew when I crossed it.

I drive both a 97 TJ and an 82 yota 4wd. I love both of them. There 2 totally different rigs. I like my jeep because you can take the top off and its lifted and locked. I just got my yota and i like it but i hate the fact that its carburated(spelling). I think either way you'll enjoy a jeep or a toyota. Both have there ups and downs. Jeep has the comanche if you want a truck also. Either way you'll be happy. And you can do a b*std lift with the cherokee and cut to fit 32s or 33s were as a sas'd or solid axle yota you can put rears and chebies and fit a lot bigger tire but cherokees look big with 32s and 33s.

I've been around the block on the which one is better than this one, not only owning different makes and models but coming from a family that has owned many and a club that also runs all kinds of different rigs. From 4x4 quads to Hummer's I've done them all, owned quite a few myself and I always seem to come back to on vehicle in particular a Toyota. I've personally owned a Dodge Ramcharger, a Willys Jeep, 3 Samurai's and 6 Toyota's. The rigs I remember the most are the Toyota's, though I've have this love hate relationship with the Samurai's. Both the Toyota's and the Samurai's have fully boxed frames that flat out make them stronger and the Toyota's just don't quit. I'd either get a 4Runner or Samurai.

Edit: Early Bronco's are pretty cool too.

the thing to remember about a jeep.... replace the j with ch
CHEEP they get like all the leftover parts from ford, dodge and chevy and see what they can build. and anyone that has ever worked on one knows they have ford carbs and ignition gm sensors and dodge suspension. I realize a cheep is a dodge product but if you look at ford or chevy they don't build the truck to fit the part, they make the part to fit the truck.
I have a 91 and a 86 and wouldn't sell either one
