As a 17 year ld kid, do you REALLY have the money to fix a rig after running the difficulty level trails that require a SFA?

Get a good, reliable, FOUR CYLINDER, MANUAL TRANNY 1st or second gen (I would recommend the first gen) 4Runner (or an 86 - 95 preTacoma truck) for $1500 or less. You won't be throwing a ton of money into the rig to keep it running and getting you to work/school like you probably will with a Jeep in the same price range.

Lastly, Toyotas can fit much larger tires with the same amount of lift than a Cherokee - they have TINY wheelwells!
'93 4Runner, V6/MT ARB's, armor, 33's, no lift!

both off-road well, jeeps are just notorious for breaking. last time i went to a major trail i didn't make it up a hill just barely with my 31s and a locker. jeep bugey behind me tried it (talking 40 something tires, SA front and rear, locked front and back, etc), broke both front axles and the brakes. my cost: pride, his cost: money and pride. i won.

Yotas are way reasonable, not only but to buy, to build. Parts are easy to come by and inexpensive.

:shakehead: You could make a Toyota go as far as that jeep in half the price and Reliability.

You said a mouth full, I have a Jeep with all Toyota parts. That should speak for it's self.

Best of both worlds at the price of both.

BTW, a Willys is not a Jeep. That came later.

I'd have to vote for a 2nd Gen 4Runner.  The first gen are cool, but they are getting old and they fixed a LOT of gremlins by the early 90s.  (plus ABS, R134A for A/C, and other goodies as well)  Find a 4 cylinder stick-shift if you can - better MPG and easier to work on.

Why?  Because the Jeep *may* be a bit better off-road if you modify it(maybe) - but the Toyota is cheaper to fix and hardly ever breaks.  I'm replacing the transmission on my 87.  It's about twelve years old - and the previous owner beat the thing up.  Not bad for an old manual.  I also can't count the number of Jeeps that I've seen on their 2nd or 3rd engine.  And as for transmissions?  Chrysler is at the bottom for those as well.   For a first car, an older Jeep is asking for lots of money out of your wallet to keep running.

Now, an old I-6 Wrangler... tougher call.  If I was looking at all for a Jeep, it would be this.  Simple to fix and easy to modify.

get a yota..... i've collected 4 1/2 already and lots of parts!!!!!
