but i've been confused on the term.. hilux???
is that just a name for these 1st gens???

Hilux is the name for a Toyota Pick Up/Mini sold anywhere but North America.

in some  search engines  the hilux  is  what you select for a 79-85,  dont ask me where,  but  ive come accross it looking up stuff

Australia, younger brother has one in Brisbane  :therethere: , check out the cool reference names and tech issues on the Aussie sites for 'Hilux' terminology.
Wow, been looking at my 4Runner rust away too long, need some inspiration and here I will find it...!

85 Toyota 4Runner, solid axle, 22Re, original paint and graphics and not a straight panel to be found!

before the toyota pickups became tacomas, they were hilux's....this was everywhere but north america.  4runners were hilux surf.

all the guys that swapped their ifs out for a SA in our "toyota pickup" can technicaly call it a hilix now right :-D
this and an option for a diesel are the only difference I know of between the pickup and the hilux...oh and the doublecab.

Traditionally, "Hilux" to most of the American 4x4 world means a Toyota 4x4, out of country - diesel, and optional 4 door truck.
