Yeah or don't waste time tapping the housing.  Brass is softer than steel and the 1/4 npt is so close it'll go in pretty easily from what I've heard.  Just screw it in.

That bellow looks like the hot ticket though!  You could just submerge the whole thing and not have to worry about running a lot of hose to keep the filter on the end dry.

exactly   I just threaded mine in, did it by hand until the very end :yesnod:

if by bellow you're talking about the breather cap on the pic robrub00 posted, those are crap.  That is what I replaced, I got water in my diffs all the time with those.

Bringing this back for the rainy season and a few questions.
How do you get a 3/8threadx1/4barb fitting to fit into an axle? Am I the only one who has trouble with this?

And why is are there so many thread standards? Metric, US (course/fine), Pipe...

robrub00

looks like people are just screwing them in.  get a tap if you want from a hardware store. or fet the metic fittings off a 22re in a junk yard. and make a hose that goes up high or into the cab.  4crawler.com has a write up i think  united staes has sae or standard metric is europe.  and there are different threads for different applications hi preassure  ie compression thread.  you have a toyota.  your in america the hardware store sells fittings for things like air compressors so you wont find a metric fitting in most hardware stores.  the 22re engines the hose from the brake booster follow it to the intake and pull the hose off bring a metric 12 wrence ( i believe might want to bring a 14 just in case)   and un screw that fitting.  go to local auto parts store.  gety some fuel line or plastic tubing or air hoes and a hose clamp!!  then get a air filter for like a lawnmower or something or a breather filter  and clap that on there. and your done!!!

I used the nissan breather it was 6 bucks and it just screwed in and used the plastic tubing like robrub said above

I understand that the Nissan and Toyota fittings work but I have herd a lot of people staying that a 3/8 will work. I'm just wondering if there was a special way to make it fit?

robrub00

use a tap and magnet  then change your diff oil or run a magnet plug,  or  just thread it in there people are saying the brass fittings will give because they are a softer metal maybe use some teflon tape and wrench it in there!  i havent done this.  i personnly would spend the time to go to a junk yard and get the fittings in metric so i donthaveto worry about it.  your over thinking this

I pulled out the diff breather fitting, and took it into the store.  Found a female end that it threaded into, and then found the male counterpart of that female end.  Piece of cake, male fittings for both ends cost me like $6.  I got the barbed fitting, so the hose has like 2" of material to clamp onto

I bought 2 of these for 1.99 ea. Think they will work?

No, the fittings are the wrong size. The threads in the housing are a BPT (metric) about the same size as a 1/8th NPT. I just used 1/8 NPT brass barbs and with a little work they threaded into the wholes. The steel of the housing is harder then the brass of the fitting so it acted like a thread die. The difference in the threads between BPT and NPT is like 1 thread per inch.

What "little work" was done?

I filed the end with a little chamfer, pushed down on it while turning it to get it started, used a wrench to thread it into the hole going about 3/4-1 turn then backing it off to clear the threads just like you do when you use a threading die. Once I felt it was deep enough in I took it out and wrapped it with telfon tape and screwed it in. I did this many years ago and have never had any water in the diffs.

hmm, guess I should grow some brains so I can remember to look at sizes... I guess ill cut off the fittings and still use the coil hose with new fittings.

I think brake line thread is the same pitch.  :eyebrow:

I used a 1/8" brass nipple, and just used a thread cleaner file to taper down the threads to get it to fit better.  It was all I could find in my town.  Some leftover fuel line I had, two clamps and a cheap fuel filter!  I spendt a total of less than $5.00 excluding the hose.  With hose probably $10.00 max.  I got it posted in the last page of my buildup!
