Lost keys. Now what?
« on: Mar 22, 2007, 08:17:59 PM »
Oh my lord.  This can't be happening. <- that sums it up right now.
Pulling my hair out here.  I went to work in Reno and noticed I brought my bike keys and my trucks keys with me.  Put them in my jacket.

Got home now, and they're gone.  100% gone.

This motorcycle means a lot to me, but the truck even more.

It's the '85 Xcab I'm selling.  I've got so many people with cash in hand that have been waiting for me to get back from Reno to buy it, and now I can't sell it!

I'm broke, money is tough(that's why I'm selling the truck to begin with).

What do I do?  Anybody know a place that can somehow make new keys for it?   For cheap(please)?

I'm in Walnut Creek, and in desperate need of your advice.  Or least tell me what I'm in for, because not knowing is the hardest part.  I'm flipping out with stress here.

Didn't work, despite multiple keys from multiple trucks.

Any guesses on how much money this will cost me?  (For the truck because I'm selling it, I can hack the Ninja because I'm keeping it)

get a key code. i did the same thing about 5 months or so back. you go to the dealership with your drivers license and all your insurance stuff. they'll give you a code and then you go to the lock smith. its pretty easy. just make sure your key works good in the door and the ignition. i took off right away going thanks and it was a PITA to unlock the door but easy to turn my truck on. it got fixed for free though.

Ditto what Tracker said.  I lost my keys at the beach one day-  5hrs from home.
Pulled the passenger door panel, popped out the lock cylinder (just remove an acutating rod and a spring clip) and had a key made for under 20 bones.

The truck I bought still had all the paperwork in the glove box, and I was looking at it the other day, and it had a full sheet of vin stickers, the lock code written down, and various other stuff that only the original owner would have gotten!

Having the key code only works if the doors & ignition have never been replaced  :twocents:

it takes 20-30 minutes to swap in a column with a good key.

my buddy at work cuts keys i'm shure he'd do it for a case of sierra, in fairfield. need the vin tho. another thing is if you go to pick and pull and there is a key you just push the lock pin in the ignition and the hole thing slides out and you can slide it in yours... real easy to do.
I'd like to quit thinking of the present as some minor insignificant preamble to something else~~~~~

Getting the Key code from the vin won't work unless it's 89ish and up. Other wise you can just pop out the passenger side lock cylinder and that will have the key code stamped on it. Take that to any toy dealer or locksmith and they will be able to cut you a key!
