Order of Operations for Newbies
« on: Mar 05, 2007, 08:44:59 AM »
With all the newbies, lets have a standard post that gives the order of operations for building a rock crawler

Here is my opinion:

1. Roll Cage (Safety First)
2. Lockers front & rear & diff protection & rock sliders

Then all at once:

3. Dual transfer case adapter, crossmember, crawler box, move wheelbase back to adjust for crawler, twinsticks, square front driveshaft, suspension, brake lines, wheels, tires.

Now post your opinion

1 Stop
2 Look

4 Search
If you still have control you aren't going fast enough

in a way i agree with you  :o i wanna wheel more better too but  :yesnod: but if you leave SAFETY till almost last you may not make it to body protection and dont you think your body is more important to protect than the rig  ???

I think it's a great idea

I know when I was a newb the only thing I could think of was lifting and bigger tires, this was before I got onto 4x4wire and spent a lot of time reading. lockers who? regearing what?

I think it would give new members a chance to see all the aspects of the sport, let them see that there's more to it than lifts and big tires.

Maybe along with the FAQ, could be a step by step for those who want to build a basic crawler with respective links to buildup pages & pics to give examples of those steps.

agreed safety is the most important, you can rebuild a vehicle but not a person. my list is based on how some people are uncertain how far they want to go with building a rig. some people just want something they can take on the 2-3 trails with ease, not get into any big off-camber situations. then as time goes on they want a more capable vehicle so they can go on the harder trails where being off-camber happens, and roll-overs occur. but, if you plan on making the vehicle a bad ass offroader from the beginning (or have a lead foot) then a roll cage is #1.

Resistance is futile. Newbs will overrun even the most prepared sites.

I think you forgot to powder coated brake rotors on your list.

Yeah, I also left out cross-drilled brake lines, but some questions have to be left for asking.
