Well guys I'm at another crossroads again.  I just pretty much sold my 87 SR5 4Runner that I had for sale a little while ago and I am trying to figure out what I am going to build now for my snow wheeling rig/occasional DD.  I got to keep my built axles from under the 87 4Runner and right now I can't decide if I want to finish my rebuild of the 36 SAS from last spring or build the stock Land Cruiser FJ40 in my backyard.

Here's what I'm thinking if I build up the FJ40
-Spring over with the mini truck axles. Possibly Linked.
-350 SBC with either and auto or manual and possibly a Atlas
-37" toyos or bigger.  Toyos for right now since I have them.
-Built Rollcage, PRP Seats
-New paint job
-and lots more I can't think of

If I keep the 36 SAS 4Runner it will have
-Full interior 8 point rollcage
-New paint and rear tub job
-Possibly a bob job
-completely new interior
-Have A/C for those hot days
-etc.  It will have every drivetrain part from before as well

If I build the FJ the 4Runner will be parted out.  I already have the interior completely out minus the dash.  The motor runs good and I know a few of you guys would want some parts from it if its parted.

So let me know what you guys think. Post up your opinions.

btw.  blackdiamond if you see this don't worry your 4Runner will be finished first before the next build

I must say I've always been a fan of the FJ40's. Build the Fj unless  you can build both of them, that would be quite cool

well it would be cool to build both but right now I am trying to downsize my fleet of vehicles.  I love the mini trucks but I think I just want to try something different now.  I used to own a Jeep and there is something to be said about being able to take the top and doors off.  I love wheeling topless.  hahaha

Build the runner and put the fj up for later. The older those things get the more rare they are and more valueable. I'm not shure why ut it doswn't bother me to see a perfect runner or ext cab cut up, but I don't like seeing those fjs distroyed from origonal form. :nerv:

"Later, I learned that even though I engage 4WD my hubs are not automatically locking? Something about manual locking hubs I think. What's manual mean? I need to read a manual to lock them? lol  So I found these neat autolocking hubs and installed them. Sometimes they dont stay locked while I am backing up, but that's fine because I dont have a backup camera to see where Im going (like our RV) so I just simply dont ever back up"- BigMike

I gotta agree with this one.  unless the FJ is already hacked, then build it!!

I didnt vote for either. If it was up to me, id build the 4runner and save the cruiser for later on. then again if you are trying to clear some space then i guess get rid of the FJ. Personaly though I would want to hold on to it. by the time you decide to build it they are going to be even harder to find. Like others have said, some pics of both projects in their current state would be good.

heres the 4Runner right now

and here's the FJ

The FJ has rust on the rear quarters and it needs new front fenders.  Its completely stock right down to the wheels.  It runs and drives and even has the original engine.

Tough call. If it was up to me, I would keep both of the beasts. They both look like awesome projects to me.  8)

Like I said earlier.  I need to keep one or the other and build just one.  Since I bought a Tacoma for my wife last week I'm paying off bills and its not like I don't have my buggy to go wheeling in still.  Hey if I wasn't trying to rebuild our savings account I'd build both of those and our new Tacoma but thats not exactly the smartest thing to do.

Its gonna be tons harder to sell the fj for its value. I would like to see an fj build too. If you have to get rid of one sell me the runner for dirt cheap and build the fj.

Sell the 35 hour build then.

I tell ya what,  I'd give a lot to get either my grandfather's old '56 jeep back, or my dad's '84 FJ60.  Jeep was my first vehicle I ever wheeled in, and the cruiser is the second.  You've got some sentimental history with a great start for a cool rig (FJ)  and you can always find another runner later, if you want to build one.  You won't ever find a cruiser in that shape again for a low(er) price.

just my :02:

actually 5

3 of mine
2 friends

All of which have been in the past year and a half.  So yeah I'm kinda burnt out with the Runners.  Not that I don't like them  I just think its time for something different.  The I6 is cool and it even runs but I want to run an atlas if i build it though.  My buddy has this setup and I love it.
