Runner died last night
« on: Dec 28, 2006, 09:36:18 AM »
I was coming home from wheelin last night, noticed my tach stopped working along with my oil press and temp guages, no blinkers, or charge/oil/check engine warning lights. It has no charge cuz it slowly died out as I got home. I was really beating on it trying to get some ass clown unstuck off a log pri has something to do with it. I haven't really had time to look it over much i'm still at work looking for some ideas.

I would start at the battery & check all the connections from the battery to the alt to the starter. Check the fuseable link.

It sounds like an alternator.  When and alternator dies, they tend to have those types of symptoms that you mentioned.

Just take you alternator down to Kragen, Autozone, etc. and have it tested.  They will do it for free.

Alternator

Spotter and I were driving her car home from Sacramento in the dark a few years ago, and everything started dying.  headlights dimmed out, dash dimmed out, radio played softer and softer, guages all dropped dead, until the car shut off.  New alternator, and we were all good

Yep, sounds like an alternator.  If you find out that is what the problem is, you might think about just putting new brushes in it yourself if that is the problem.  They get wore out after a long time.  I replaced mine for less then $5, those brushes should last another 100,000 miles or so now.

Sounds like the Alt to me.  Brushes are easy to replace if you have a few small sockets.

All to familiar. Check the alternator out hit any big water mud holes? I wiped out my share of alternators in mud holes, diode packs dont like mud holes. Then there was another nite when I was climbing a hill and hit this rock so hard I lost the battery and it shorted out agaist the centerlink that was ugly. Get your voltmeter, ohm meter, out and do some probing.

Just take you alternator down to Kragen, Autozone, etc. and have it tested.  They will do it for free.

Just make sure you DO NOT BUY AN ALTERNATOR FROM THEM!  I agree about replacing the brushes yourself, but try getting them from the toyota dealer.
