22-RE Sweet Spot
« on: Dec 17, 2006, 07:54:52 AM »
What is the optimal RPM for the 22-RE motor for highway fuel economy? I have seen this somewhere on the net and can not find it now. I am trying to find this to help me calculate what gear ratio / tire size to use. I am not so concerned with being able to light up the tires at a stop sign as dual cases will give me all the low range off road grunt necessary. I would like to be able to drive 70-75 on the Highway and not be at 3,000 (plus) on the Tach.

Thanks!

well the sweet spot for a 22re  IS  3000-3200

i  usually  shoot  for  3500 at 70

when i worked 50 miles away  i almost always   ran down the interstate  at 3800  at around 75

i always got 17 mpg,   and had plenty of power to go,

2900  is the  lowest  i would ever think  of  going for,  and then if you hit a hill  you'll be dropping a gear befor you know it

i tow  with my truck  so soon  i will be regearing to 5.29's  so my 55mph  rpm  will be  3200 in 4th

Thats what they have rev limiters for right?

I know on my old 81 truck with the 22r around 3200 it got the best MPG. I havent had my 22re on the freeway enough yet but I would imagine its about the same. My old truck also was around 2800 at 55 and got about 15 but around 3200 at 75ish it got 23. My new 86 4runner with a 22re also gets about 15-16 at 55 and i had it at 75 for a while and it raised the average to about 18.
RIP Kyota.... you are the man

Glad i read this. With the tires I have on my runner right now and the stock gearing I am turning about 2500 when i am doing 55 according to my GPS. I wanted to regear it to correct my speedometer but was worried that having the engine turning faster would hurt my milage even more than it is already. Best milage I have ever gotten while I have had the truck is 14.

Knowing this, if what i heard about the price on Differentials for the Christmas sale is right I am going to have to jump on it

Just to go all quasi-nerd on yo'asses.. The "sweet" spot for any motor is where it's volumeteric efficiency is highest.
Course, you have to take into consideration that you can't run WOT all the time.. OK, maybe you can with a toyota.. But also that the faster you go the worse mileage you'll get.
I'm going to post volumetric efficiencies for the 22RE.. "VEbin".
Y-axis is throttle position.. we'll say 0-109 (0-100% throttle)
X-axis is RPM.
Enjoy..

Where ever your peak torque is, is where your motor should get the best mileage.  Of course, this varies with thottle position.

Thing about the 22r series is that it's torque peak is really flat..
I posted one up over at: http://board.marlincrawler.com/index.php?topic=29547.0

I should note that my VEs above are probably within 10%, but they're not perfect.

if ya read the owners manual(which i used to do allllll the time befor ei got my license), it says in there that the 22re is "most efficient at 3200rpm".....so thats PROBABLY why yall are gettin great mileage at 3200...
