Upgrades for a grenaded G52 trans
« on: Feb 09, 2004, 11:08:19 PM »
Grenaded the G52 in my race truck this weekend. Was 42 miles into the MDR 250 and lost 2nd. Options were to stop, radio for the trailer adn call it a day, or keep going until it totaly quit or something came out the side of the case. Chose option 2 and put 210 hard race miles on it - using  Hi 1st, 3rd, and  Lo 4 & 5 - at the end it was making a god aweful noises(you could hear us coming) and only 4th gear still worked-but we took 3rd place.
So now it is back in the garage with a blown trans..
Have another G52 that I can throw in, but want something stronger.
Also have 2 R150's complete with chain xfer cases. What needs to be done to swap the R150's onto  a 22r?
Will the chain drive case be as durable (strong) as the gear cases? We do not run a crawler, but reliability is a concern.
What other tranny options can I swap in?
Once i get another trans, i will post pics of the carnage in the case.

The r150 and 151 are your best bet. You have to swap the bellhousing though. I believe and I believe the chain ddrive t-case isn't as strong as the gear driven simply because its gear driven and not chain. Oh ya 22R turbo bell housings are removable I believe

Your G52 is the weakest of all 84-95' trans. The strongest would be a R seires trans. It is found in two trucks; 1. 86-87 22R turbo trucks with a 23 spline gear driven t-case.
2. 88-95' 3.0 V6, and 96-02' 3.4 V6 (left hand drive front diff) both have chain driver t/cases.

The 22R turbo trans (R151F) is the best and has a gear driven t-case. It is a direct replacement that bolts right in. I have 6 turbo trans and t-case units in stock!

The 88-95 3.0 V6 (R150F) is also a good trans. To bolt it to a 22R, you will need a turbo trans bellhousing (used $125.00). The gear driven t-case has a poor service record becase of the heavy, wide drive chain. I sell an adapter to put a stronger gear driven t/case behind the V6 trans $349.00 but it also requires a 23 spline input gear $185.00. Also, the t/case but be a top shifting model that is found in 79-83, and 85-88 efi trucks.
The shifter handles would be in the same position on the R151F trans, but would be 4" rearward on the R150F trans.

Hope this helps, Marlin.

The R151 would work except that cost is a consideration. That and availability.  But it may be my only optoin.
The R150 will not fit, the reason is the top shift Xfer case lever would have to be relocated, and the new hole is in the area of a cage node (intersectiong cage tubes). The work to totally redo the interior cage is not worth it.  That at the added lenght will require all new drive lines.
What other forward shift tranys will work - G58, G59, GXX ???

Only a 84-85' G52 (wimpy), 86-88' G54 (better), or 86-87' R151F (the very best) would bolt right in

The 89-95' G58 uses the chain driven t-case so it is out :_oops:

The only other trans is a 89-95' 4 runner, or a 90-95' pickup forward shifting W56. It would be 50% stronger? however, both trans-t/case handles would be 1/2" rearward. You would also need the matching t/case with the 1/2"shorter shift rod. Everthing else would bolt right up
