The things that come to those who wait, may be the things left by those who got there first.

So sad when something like this happens.  People unprepared or inexperienced get into bad situations

Let this be a reminder to all of this to be careful and be prepared when we go to play and travel in the snow

People give me crap...'cause, I'm a belt and suspenders guy. When I go out in the boonies I carry enough stuff to get me through a week of being lost or injured.

we trail ride so much we typically go out with enough for a few days, but your average joe doesn't think like that.
First rule of thumb STAY WITH YOUR VEHICLE. Not that that always works either.
Oh well, :pokinit: happens.

in the winter, I put a shell on my truck, have 2 gallons of water, spare fluids for my truck, coupla cans of chili (keep ya full and warm  :disturbed: and you can eat them cold if you have to) a sleeping bag, a spare change of clothes, and some other misc. stuff :dunno:  most of that is there in the summer too, but winter is when it is important. And I don't even live in the snow!! :hahaha:

Also, people don't realize how dangerous it can be to run the car when it is stuck in the snow.  My parents knew some people that dies in CO while visiting relatives because they got stuck, and ran the car for warmth, and the Carbon Monoxide killed them. people think the exhaust will create a hotspot, and melt the snow, letting the gases escape, but it doesn't when the tailpipe is buried.

we do.  but there's always those idiots that don't pay attention, or don't listen, or think they can handle it.

This is all too true, BUT, something to consider is that he was city folk and not from the area, so he was more ignorant than an idiot (I know you're not actually calling him an idiot directly either).  My guess is that after several days his basic survival instinct kicked in, at which point he left the car.  Problem is, and this is a big big no no in this situation, but it really sounds as if he didn't follow his tracks back out, which may have led to his being found.  You can make up far more ground on a road than ambling through the hills aimlessly.

A bad situation indeed, but hopefully people learn from it.  I feel horribly for the family, but hopefully the wife and children will cope well.
