a little help please
« on: Nov 04, 2006, 01:33:46 PM »
I having never delt much with early trannys before don't know how to remove the shifter from the 1st gen five speed that my bro in law and I are pulling out of a donor rig. It is an 85 but the trans and motor were swaped into it from a first gen toy probably an 82-83. The tranny shifter bolts to the top of the case whith 4 bolts and appears to have some sort of shift rail that continues foward accross the top. Any advice would be great as we are in the middle of pulling the complete drivetrain out right now.  Thanks in advance.

We managed to wiggle it all out only to find out that its  only a four speed :maddest:. Its a good thing I have a spare five speed laying around.  He got a real good deal on this thing 300.00 and it drove onto the trailer. I will get pics later. does anyone know of any advantages to running a four speed over a five?

There is a collar on the shifter in the base that you push down and turn counter clock wise to remove from the two pins.

Only advantage is if you don't need 5th gear.

Here are some pics of the rig we are putting together, the one we are taking apart and the trans shifter.
I can hardly belive how much trouble the simple things can be sometimes. Thank you Willy Mamoth , nice build by the way.

I guess the electrical tape is not stock  :ha_ha:

just wondering where you got the tranny, cuz neither of those trucks are first gen. :headscratch: That trans should not have been in either.

In the second sentance of the first post I noted that the MOTOR AND TRANS were swaped in from a first gen to the 85.  You should have seen the way it was done too. One bolt in each side of the trans crosmember then some really porus welds on each side. the sazawll made short work of it though.

you cant  remove the top of the "shifter base"  without  removing  the top of the tranny,  well you can  but  that collar in there will brake  :ack:

you know i RARELY  use  5th gear in my truck  :dunno:

This will be a trail only rig so no 5th gear shouldn't be a big deal. I do use fith gear in my toy but I am running a doubler and 5.29 gears. I  only use fith to get from one spot to another at my local wheeling area so I wont have to stop and shift my cases.
It turns out we couldnt get the 4speed in reverse either ,but that may be the shifter seat. :dunno:
