Modifying a Tacoma Input Shaft?
« on: Jan 30, 2004, 08:46:03 AM »
In my continuing my quest to find a good way to mate the 7M-GTE Supra motor to the R series truck transmissions I was wondering if there might be a way to have a machinist cut a new lower ratio gear onto a Tacoma input shaft. A lower ratio like 4.31 would have a smaller diameter gear than the Taco shaft currently has at 3.83. Is there enough metal there to cut an entirely new gear? Or how about 5.15 like the R452 1 ton truck?

It would be impossible to put a 4.31 first gear (11 teeth on the countershaft) in place of the 3.83 (13 teeth on the c/s). No way to cut 11 over the top of 13, there would be no teeth left!!!!
To do this, a new c/s with the greater helix angle to match the longer input gear must be made. I can have this custom made by the orginal gear cutter in Japan. Minimun order is 50 c/s's, and you would also need the matching 1st speed gear with the newer syncrow design.
I don't think it would be worth it for such a minor 1th gear change.
If there was intrest, I could still look into it :dunno:

I feel it would be better to install a R452 because of the super low 1st gear. (You would take off in 2nd gear)
We would need to find a reliable source, (I have a standing order with my importer, but only one in stock!), Install the side shifting 2wd R452 gearset into a 3.0 4x4 complete trans with bellhousing, and build the unit complete. We are looking at some $$$$$$$ here.

Keep looking, and I will keep thinking :hammer:

Thanks for letting me bounce my "half-baked" ideas off of you on this bbs, in fact I'll get back to you shortly with another one. It's almost as much fun as talking to you over the phone and probably a slightly better use of you time.
