They're wheel bolts (a pita to put on), and there are only 3 because they're only holding the spare on, so they make a triangle in the pattern.  but it came factory with only 3

Ive never heard of that,  it looks like a normal rim, how come you dont just put all the origional lugs back on, three sounds scary for offroad...

There are no wheel studs on the tail gate.. the wheel studs are the "lug nuts".... the tail gate simply has threaded holes.

It's seen mostly on trailers, not vehicles.

The top pic shows the spare LOL  But I was refering to the pass rear tire,  three are larger and shiny and three look like bare studs...  There are typically only three bolts holding the spare onto the tailgate of any rig but when the spare takes the place of a flat on the drive axles usually all the lugs go on...

No, I have all 6 on the passenger rear I have solid deep lug nuts on 3 wheel studs, and I have 3 shallow lug nuts, I just placed them every other one

The truck in the picture  . This will be my 4th 4x4 with either a spool or welded rear end or Lock Rite locker that I've owned. I actually like the spool or welded rear axle  better than a lunch box  locker in the rear end. Everybody is different just my preference.
